Position description

What is Cornell University and what is Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs?
Cornell University, unique among peers, is the federal land-grant institution of New York State, a private endowed university, and a member of the Ivy League.   Global Operations is part of the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs (OVPIA). As such, it shares the organization's mission of developing and supporting global teaching, research, and engagement,  and aligns its goals with priorities established by the vice provost. OVPIA works collectively to expand multicultural knowledge and global awareness across the entire Cornell community: in Ithaca, New York City, and the world.

What you will do:
In this newly created role, as the International HR Director, you will leverage your deep knowledge of international employment practices, compliance, and policy, collaborating with internal HR directors, tax managers, risk management, office of sponsored program, and legal counsel on issues relating to staffing abroad and global mobility.  You will educate clients and stakeholders who are often unfamiliar with international HR principles and practices.  This role has a direct impact on the overall success of the university by identifying and responding to international human capital needs through analysis, problem solving, and presentation of well-informed and relevant solutions for engagement in numerous countries. This will include providing regulatory due diligence, compensation analysis, contracting, payroll administration, benefits procurement and administration AND employee services.

As the International HR Director, you will participate in the startup of Cornell’s legal entities and/or engage with employers of record in various countries.  Due to the peculiar nature of Cornell’s small presence in many countries, you will design an executable global HR strategy with unusually complex challenges often requiring novel approaches.

  • This role features a dual reporting relationship to the Executive Director of Global Operations as well as the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for Cornell. It is the best of both worlds; you will work strategically and day to day with our Global Operations leadership team while receiving complementary support from our CHRO.
  • Be the heart of--and subject matter expert for--International HR initiatives and strategic objectives.Whether it be developing a global compensation scheme to onboarding overseas employees, you will bring passion, energy, and pop to the table.
  • If that is not enough for you, we have more! You will also be responsible for developing Cornell’s global employment and total rewards strategy.

We need a globally minded collaborative leader who thrives on putting strategy into action.  Ideally, you will have demonstrated the ability to succeed in a fast paced, high energy, environment where you thrived on tackling challenges, navigating through ambiguity and establishing processes from the ground up. Additionally, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of progressively responsible HR experience, including benefits and compensation. 1-2 years of experience with international HR, including global mobility processes and compliance with regulations in multiple countries. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment of leading teams to develop and implement business processes and best practices in a highly decentralized environment.
  • Ability to envision and implement HR strategies that balance simplicity and consistency with the flexibility to meet client needs.
  • An advanced level of comfort with technological, solutions-based approaches to recordkeeping and business intelligence solutions--with a history of leveraging online platforms to manage workflow.
  • Lastly, strong communication skills are paramount for this role. You will be working with all different levels of the organization and should enjoy explaining complex concepts to a variety of stakeholders

If you have all those things, great!  We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it is ok if you do not.

  • Advanced knowledge of international compensation and benefits strategies
  • Experience with tax issues for international assignees
