Position description

Founded in 1914 by Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is a New York institution with global reach. For over 100 years, the Council has promoted voices for ethics in international relations education and policy. Through its Ethics Studio, the Council produces multimedia programs for television, radio, and web audiences worldwide. Its Global Ethics Network of Fellows is active in two dozen countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East.

Carnegie Council’s Development Department manages the organization’s individual and institutional fundraising operations.

The grant writer plays a vital role in Carnegie Council’s ongoing fundraising efforts. She/he is responsible for drafting grant documents and funding appeals, editing and monitoring senior fellows’ proposals and reports, and researching new funding opportunities. The grant writer works in collaboration with staff members across all departments and closely coordinates efforts with the executive office.

Main responsibilities:

  • Writing new grant proposals and concept notes for institution-wide support.
  • Drafting reports for major individual and institutional donors.
  • Editing, filing, and providing assistance on senior fellows’ fundraising documents.
  • Assisting in drafting budgets and generating financial reports.
  • Researching, identifying, and assessing new foundation and corporate funding opportunities.
  • Maintaining records of prospect and donor engagement, as well as managing contacts.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences, preferably in International Relations, Political Science, Philosophy, or related disciplines.
  • Background and interest in ethics in international affairs.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Diplomatic with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Able to complete projects in a timely manner without supervision.
  • Familiar with nonprofit organizations and funders.
  • Experience with grant writing or in a development department strongly preferred.
