The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA) is one of the world’s leading schools of international affairs and one of the largest schools of international affairs in the United States. The Office of Graduate Admissions at the Elliott School of International Affairs provides comprehensive information about ESIA graduate programs and admissions procedures to prospective domestic and international graduate students.

This position reports to the Director of Graduate Admissions. The Associate Director of Graduate Admissions is responsible for managing a strategic and comprehensive recruiting strategy in domestic and overseas markets and oversees the School’s admissions and visa document processing for incoming graduate students. This position serves and integral role on the Graduate Admissions team and directly impacts targeted ESIA enrollment projections per semester. Responsibilities include:

Manages a comprehensive and data driven recruitment strategy in domestic and international markets.

Ensures that all ESIA on-campus and online graduate programs are properly marketed in assigned territories, and actively recruits and manages ‘arm chair recruiting’ efforts in these territories. Serves as the primary international recruiter.

Oversees the entire application process for ESIA on-campus and online graduate programs.

Works closely with the Assistant Director, Graduate Admissions Counselor, Executive Assistant and student workers, as well as Program Directors to ensure all systems and processes are functioning properly and updated as needed.

Facilitates the Admissions Review process for all applications with each academic department.

Manages four strategic communication plans to prospects, applicants, and admitted students and oversees admissions website, social media and marketing strategy.

Works closely with the team’s Director to facilitate and allocate scholarship and funding opportunities for recruiting and retaining high caliber graduate level students.

Advises Graduate Admissions Counselor in international credential evaluation and financial document review for the I-20 form creation.

Works closely with the team’s Director to manage reporting to School and University leadership, ensures performance dashboards are updated, handles other reporting on-demand, tracks the unit’s budgets and makes recommendations for cost-effective budget allocation during the University’s budget-call season.

Performs additional assigned duties. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Prior admissions related experience at a college or university; experience successfully managing a comprehensive graduate recruitment and admissions strategy for both domestic and international markets.

Proficiency in using web-based communicaiton tools inluding but not limited to online chat, social media.

Exemplary verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in one or more foreign languages is preferred.

Excellent problem-solving skills. A history of strong attention to detail and ability to organize large quantities of information for distribution to and use by others.

Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to help people feel at ease. Be able to function comfortably in a team structure and be able to speak before large and small groups with confidence. Demonstrated comfort in foreign cultures and easily adaptable to new situations.

Graduate degree in higher education administration, internal education or related field is desired.
