To advise, support and retain international students at NOVA resulting in most cases the successful completion of an associate’s degree.
Duties and Responsibilities
Act as primary NOVA adviser for a cohort of international students regarding USCIS requirements, transfer pathways and other matters related to living and studying in the northern Virginia area; process immigration documents; support various student events; provide admissions information to prospective students and visitors; assist in other OIE activities as requested. Adviser may have 1-2 primary campus assignments but may be asked to offer temporary coverage at other campuses as needed. Thorough knowledge of F1 regulations and the requirements related to SEVIS.
Bachelor’s degree in international affairs, counseling, education or related field or equivalent applicable experience and/or training. Several years’ of experience serving as an International Student Advisor/Designated School Official. Experience working with MS Office Suite and student data bases.
Master’s degree in international affairs, counseling, education or related field or equivalent applicable experience and/or training. Significant experience as a International Student Advisor/Designated School Official. Experience living and/or studying outside the US. Foreign language skills other than English.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to advise students on F1 visa regulations. Interpersonal and organizational skills. Effective team building and collaboration on projects. Ability to make independent decisions based on program policy interpretation. Flexibility and desire to participate in developing new programs and procedures. Familiarity with the US higher education system and community colleges.
