Position description

Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organization committed to the relief, assistance and advancement of the poorest people in the least developed countries of the world. Founded in Ireland in 1968, Concern Worldwide has nearly 4,000 personnel working in 24 countries across the globe. Concern believes in a world where no one lives in fear; where all have access to a decent standard of living and the opportunities essential to a long, healthy and creative life. Our mission is to help people living in absolute poverty achieve major improvements in their lives, improvements that are sustainable without ongoing support from Concern.

Concern Worldwide US is an independent affiliate of Concern Worldwide, with offices in New York and Chicago. Our mandate is to support the work of Concern Worldwide by financially supporting programs, representing Concern with national/international co-funders and organizations, facilitating the recruitment of personnel and raising the organization’s profile. Concern Worldwide US also engages in development education programs with the general public and with high schools in the US.

Concern US has a growing portfolio of US Government-funded programs, which is currently comprised of awards from USAID, including the Office of US-Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and Food for Peace (FFP), as well as from the US Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM).

Role:

Concern Worldwide US seeks a highly motivated team player to help us raise new funds and expand our partnership with the US government to maintain and expand Concern Worldwide’s global humanitarian, emergency response, and development programs. While this is a fixed-term position for six months (with potential for transition to full-time dependent upon funding), it is an exciting opportunity to learn the US government funding process, especially for emergency response programming. The Temporary Business Development Coordinator (6 Month Fixed-Term) will play a key role in a small but highly effective Business Development unit on the International Programs team in New York. This is a full time, fixed term position.

Responsibilities:

  • Track new grant applications and/or contract proposals for Concern Worldwide programs;
  • Learn and communicate all donor requirements and parameters in solicitations and notices of funding opportunity that are of interest to Concern Worldwide, and share with the team internally;
  • Conduct thorough reviews of technical and financial proposals to ensure they meet high copy edit standards, US Government compliance (including USAID and State Department), and solicitation-specific guidelines and deadlines;
  • Liaise with other departments in Concern US (e.g., program officers, finance team, etc.) to support business development efforts;
  • Develop relationships with business development colleagues at peer organizations to expand Concern’s network of collaborators, partners, and donors;
  • Draft and update marketing materials such as capacity statements, past performance references, or other similar documents;
  • Maintain knowledge management systems (e.g., Salesforce);
  • Conduct other duties in the programs or development function as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, political science, public policy, or similar;
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in international development, humanitarian, or social sector;
  • Proven ability to write clear, logical, articulate, and persuasive proposals, including cost proposals and budgets;
  • Excellent English language editing skills and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and handle multiple and often competing deadlines, which involves working with colleagues in different time zones;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous research and analysis, and present insights in a clear, concise manner;
  • Strong interpersonal skills (e.g., facilitation and conflict management) and the ability to work in a culturally diverse team environment;
  • Strong motivation and interest and learning how US Government fundraising and business development works;
  • Commitment to the work and values of Concern Worldwide;
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in international relations, political science, public policy, or similar;
  • Knowledge and experience of US Government business development processes, especially those of USAID and/or State Department;
  • Demonstrated track record in securing and/or managing US Government grants, including those from USAID and/or State Department;
  • Overseas living and/or professional experience;
  • French language skills.
