Through grant making, fellowships, convening, and a special reserve fund used as crises and unexpected opportunities arise, OS-US seeks to promote full participation in the nation's civic, political, and economic life-particularly for communities that are historically marginalized and vulnerable-and to ensure that the core institutions of civil society are effective and accountable to the public.

OS-US and its lobbying affiliate, the Open Society Policy Center, conduct and support advocacy on a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues, including strong human rights policies, cooperative global engagement, better access to public health services, and greater corporate and governmental transparency and accountability.

Position Summary

OS-US is hiring a senior strategist and campaigner to direct and scale the advocacy efforts of the foundation and its partners to promote a more just and accountable government in the United States.

The Director will develop a vision and strategy for advocacy, including goals, campaigns, coalitions, and capacity. Regularly ranked as one of the largest investors in federal advocacy, OS-US will be expanding strategic support for urgent and long-term reforms of democracy, justice, and equality.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in legislative and electoral advocacy campaigns, with a proven track-record of results and of fostering effective, inclusive coalitions. She/he/they will engage with a wide range of policy makers, progressive movement leaders, including grantees, and others to help secure policy wins that build on and reinforce decades of investment in organizing, litigation, advocacy, and community power.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee design, implementation, and impact assessment of an ambitious strategy and budget for advancing all OS-US advocacy priorities.
  • Manage and expand a team of experienced advocates, communications professionals, and policy specialists.
  • Predict and plan for policy development opportunities (Congressional, Administration, State - inside and outside government), and serve as lead advocate for reforms central to OSF leadership and programs.
  • Develop and manage relationships with government officials to advance policy and program aims in ways that are both opportunistic and drive long-term goals.
  • Strengthen existing advocacy campaigns (and coalitions) and develop new ones in collaboration with OSF staff and partners.
  • Contribute original content for op-eds, blogs, and websites, represent OS-US in the media, provide direction to communications staff on media strategies, and develop relationships with key reporters.
  • Regularly represent OSF at meetings in Washington, D.C., and globally, as well as in the media or other formats, when required to advance the mission.


Qualifications:

  • An impressive track record of influencing public opinion and policy, having led inside and outside issue advocacy strategies at State and Federal levels.
  • Excellent management skills - of people, projects, and campaigns; a trusted team builder who sets high standards and holds staff, consultants, and partners, accountable to them.
  • Experience designing and executing successful grassroots civic engagement, public opinion, and legislative campaigns.
  • Strategic instincts, judgement and experience necessary to design, execute, and/or identify effective change strategies.
  • Track record of building coalitions and campaigns to secure power for communities of color and underrepresented groups.
  • Exceptional political acumen; ability to work across issues and players, internally and externally to achieve results, building rapport and alliances quickly and easily.
  • Skillful capacity to navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and bring a deep commitment to advancing these values internally and in all work.
  • Extensive relationships spanning the Hill, the Federal government, media, and key movement leaders and influencers outside government.
  • Exceptional communication skills (strategic, interpersonal, written).
  • Intimate knowledge of issues threatening US democracy and the leaders/groups working to address them.
  • Experience working across the issue areas core to the OS-US mission.

  • Must be based in DC; some travel required.
