Under the leadership and supervision of the Vice-president for DHA, the Associate Director for Resource Mobilization at DHA leads the development, implementation and review of the DHA Resource Mobilization strategy, program and plan. The Associate Director for Resource Mobilization is responsible for leading the diversification of funding for our development programs in the regions where CWS works. The Associate Director will be expected to work closely with various key internal staff including fundraising and program staff globally
The Associate Director will have strong inter-personal communication and relationship-building skills to lead DHA in the diversification of its Institutional donor funding base and propose creative strategies to ensure the growth and continuation of CWS mission in development and humanitarian assistance in the U.S. and abroad. The Associate Director will assist CWS in building constituencies that share the objectives of CWS-DHA, understands them, and aspires to see them realized; will use team work and collaboration to ensure adequate use of fundraising resources and staff; communicates and prospects with potential funders and create opportunities for CWS staff (including board members) to engage with potential donors where such relationships could increase positive outcomes.
The Associate Director works to expand funding for DHA from private foundations, including family foundations and company / corporate foundations, and other institutional donors.
- Accurately and confidently represent CWS DHA programs to institutional donors, especially relevant key bi-lateral funders and private foundations.
- In line with the overall CWS Fundraising Strategy; Lead the development of a DHA resource mobilization plan and program with specific focus on institutional donors (e.g. U.S. government agencies, the European Union, other bi-lateral donors such as Embassies and non-U.S. development agencies, e.g. JICA, UKAID, etc., UN agencies, and others) and private foundations.
- In coordination with key DHA staff, lead the implementation and perform periodic reviews of the DHA resource mobilization strategy and program and update an annual plan for resource mobilization that compliments ongoing CWS Funds Development Strategy and Marketing efforts. Develop, facilitate implementation and monitor a specific strategy with the Funds Development and Management team (FDM) to increase fundraising of broadly designated resources
- Develop a sound understanding of DHA programs (Country and Regional) and partnership strategies.
- In collaboration with key DHA program staff, identify and develop strong partnerships with new donors and expand DHA funding opportunities with a diverse base of institutional donors, building knowledge and awareness of DHA program portfolios.
- Ensure that DHA donor data is updated on existing systems for the management and tracking private and public funding opportunities, deadlines and submission requirements to ensure that opportunities are considered. For confirmed proposal development actions, working with key field and HQ staff, coordinate and track all requirements according to an agreed timeline from project design and budgeting to concept note or proposal development (writing, editing, finalizing) and on-time submission per donor requirements.
- Oversee the population and use of fundraising software tools as relevant;
- Related to funding request (proposal, concept note) submission, work with field-based DHA program and US-based Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation colleagues to ensure the quality of draft concept notes and proposals meet all donor requirements. For funded projects and programs; review and improve donor updates and reports
- Work with Funds Development, Marketing, Communications and regional colleagues to support development of program briefs, appeals and other donor communications.
- Serve as a member of the DHA Leadership Team
- Undertake other projects and leadership/management duties, as requested.
- A demonstrated interest in, understanding of and commitment to rights-based community development and humanitarian assistance. work that respects and uplifts vulnerable people. Knowledge of international institutional donor base will be considered an asset.
- Must be passionate about social change and understand the value and strategic function of fundraising in creating that change.
- Commitment to building, nurturing and expanding CWS strategic and collaborative partnerships.
Master’s degree in international affairs or Development studies
A qualification in marketing will be an added advantage
- At least 7 years’ experience in resource mobilization (as described in detail above);
- Experience in an international development and humanitarian organizations is essential; and, experience from one of the regions where CWS works strongly preferred;
- Demonstrated ability to research private and government funding prospects to identify relevant donors, and to cultivate and/or steward donors appropriately;
- Proven understanding and demonstrated experience in diversifying the funding base for non-profit organizations. Specially with private institutional donors specifically Corporates and Foundation
- Demonstrated experience with standard contractual requirements, especially for US government, other bi-lateral and European Union funding mechanisms, and in writing institutional grant proposals. Proven ability to think strategically and write clear and persuasive proposal informed by a clear understanding of Development and Humanitarian Assistance related work
- Ability to work alongside and across departments in coordination with established CWS resource generation structures
- Superior interpersonal skills;
- Motivation to be a self-starter with a positive attitude who can take initiative, attend to detail and follow through on assignments;
- Flexibility, and a commitment to teamwork with a high energy, diverse and well-established team;
- Ability to work independently;
- Experience working with confidential information, including budgets that include compensation information;
- Facility and ease with current technology, particularly as it relates to submitting funding documents (concept notes, funding proposals and related documents) electronically;
- Complete familiarity and comfort with Microsoft and other computer technologies (Word, Outlook, etc.) specifically, database use / management;
- Experience working with faith-motivated constituencies and ecumenical movements preferred;
- At least 30% Travel
- Fluency in a second language is an advantage
