Teaching in UK universities may be different to the methods that students have experienced so far. NCUK programmes are designed to equip students with the independent learning skills they will need to succeed when they progress to university study. Teachers will ensure that students have the opportunity to develop the study skills required to plan their own workload and find the motivation, discipline and time to study and learn. All instruction will support the key principle that in UK universities it is important for students to take responsibility for their own learning in order to succeed. Teachers will aim to develop students as confident, independent learners who are able to reflect on learning, so that they recognise and react appropriately to their strengths and weaknesses. Each teacher will follow the relevant NCUK module syllabus in order to:
- Deliver the subject using methods commonly used in UK higher education – lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshop classes, together with case studies and surveys, laboratory and practical classes.
- Give students the opportunity to practise a wide range of study skills including individual and group presentations, project work and extended assignments
- Where appropriate, make classes as student-centred as possible.
Integration of teaching between subject module and EAP tutors helps students acquire and apply the skills necessary to succeed at university in the UK. There should be regular discussion between the subject module teachers and EAP teachers on the preparation and delivery of lessons. Areas for discussion and collaboration can include: upcoming lecture/tutorials, areas where students are struggling, assessments, etc.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching in line with the set NCUK syllabus and guidelines.
- Teaching lessons according to the NCUK approach, materials and principles and according to all BSC PDR and accreditation criteria.
- Providing cover for absent teachers according to the needs of the school.
- Appropriate planning and preparation of lessons in line with the NCUK syllabus.
- Setting, marking and correcting of regular assessments and homework in accordance with the NCUK Academic Handbook.
- Assisting in invigilating, testing and assessing the level of students when required.
- Attending all staff meetings and teacher development seminars as required.
- Collaborating and liaising with other teachers, colleagues and professionals to support and maximize student progress and performance and reporting to the Programme Manager/School Director any welfare issues.
- Being familiar with the NCUK Academic Handbook and all academic NCUK documentation and any relevant up-dates.
- Supporting and advising new and less experienced or qualified teachers when required.
- Assisting in handing out and collecting student questionnaires and feedback.
- Overseeing the general welfare of all students and responding appropriately.
- Undertaking pastoral duties where relevant.
- Managing student behaviour in the classroom and on school premises, and applying appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour.
- Ensuring safeguarding policies are adhered to and report suspicions, allegations or incidents to the designated member of staff at your centre (usually the School Director/Academic Director).
- Complying with all Experience English/ British Study Centres and NCUK policies.
- Completing all paperwork relating to lessons including schemes of work, work records, tutorial records, assessment administration, and registers at the beginning of every lesson and notifying the correct member of staff of any absence or lateness.
- Ensuring learners are clear about the requirements of the course throughout the year and any relevant regulations pertaining to the school and their course.
- Any other ad-hoc duties as required.
- A relevant academic qualification at UK graduate level such as International Relations, History, Politics etc. (Essential).
- Relevant teaching experience, normally minimum two years (Essential).
- The ability to contribute to integrated teaching across the curriculum (Essential).
- An understanding of UK higher education and the needs and requirements of international students (Essential).
- Direct experience of further and higher education in an international context (Essential).
- A recognised teaching qualification in relevant subject (Desirable).
- Experience of the development of academic programmes (Desirable).
- Experience of academic assessment and standards, and of quality assurance procedures (Desirable).
- Experience of teaching non-native speakers of English (Desirable).
- An understanding of private sector education (Desirable).
