Position description

The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs is one of the world’s leading schools of international affairs and one of the largest schools of international affairs in the United States. Academic Programs seeks a Senior Instructional Designer. This senior position collaborates regularly with university faculty to plan for and design online courses, including, but not limited to, finalizing course goals and learning objectives, course alignment and outline, and plans for the use of media in the course. The position designs, develops, and delivers comprehensive and in-depth workshops and training sessions to faculty and professional staff on instructional design topics, and manages the coordination of instructional development project teams, to ensure project deadlines are met. This role consults with faculty and lower level staff on complex or unique scenarios. The position designs and builds eLearning projects for courses and other projects. This position may train other instructional design staff members.

This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Academic Programs at the Elliott School of International Affairs and:

  • Supports ESIA leadership in enhancing the online student experience. This includes developing policies and implementing best practices impacting online courses, as well as online student orientations, virtual access to on-campus events, and online student community building.
  • Supports ESIA leadership and faculty in assessment of online student learning success and proposes suggestions for improvement in online teaching and course delivery.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditor, university, and school standards for all online courses offered by ESIA.
  • Oversees course transitions to new instructors and establishes course readiness procedures.
  • Informs ESIA leadership about recent technological advancements in online course design and delivery and explores feasibility of those options for the online format. Incorporates the use of new technologies and aids in training faculty in latest innovations geared towards success in online education.
  • Ensures that all content is ADA compliant and accessible for all students.
  • Aids in the design on base course material to be compliant with QM (Quality Matters) standards, while working to enhance design flexibility and adaptability once the course is live.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ Years of prior working experience as instructional designer in a higher education institution
  • Experience in working with Blackboard (LMS)
  • Experience with Adobe Suite (in particular Captivate), or Storyline
  • Experience with managing multiple course design/project workflows
  • Quality Matters, OSCQR, or similar quality course design rubric training and design experience
  • Experience using WebEx and live-streaming software, as compatible with laptop computers, desktop computers and Smartboards
