Position description

The new role of Associate Director of Foundation Relations will be responsible for building the philanthropic and foundation revenue for both unrestricted and project specific restricted support for the work of the Population Council. As a senior member of the Development and Engagement team, this individual is charged with setting the direction, implementing and ensuring success of the foundation and philanthropic fundraising program in coordination with research colleagues and the Business Development team. This individual will have oversight of the philanthropy team with a staff of two mid-level professionals.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Work with Council researchers and Business Development team to identify foundations for unrestricted and restricted support for the Council’s priority research initiatives and develop and implement cultivation strategies for them that include face-to-face solicitations, proposals, presentations and other written materials.

2. Conceptualize, plan and write grant proposals, including budgets. 

3. Ensure proper stewardship and acknowledgement of grants and philanthropic gifts, including writing of progress reports on funded projects/initiatives.

4. In coordination with program staff, steward relationships with select existing foundation partners, securing and coordinating pertinent information, reports and meetings.

5. Work with program and finance staff to develop strategic cost proposals and budgets by understanding donor requirements, trends, language, and the competitive landscape to present clear and persuasive proposals for funding.

6. Support the development of corporate partnerships working with research and program staff to identify opportunities in countries where the Population Council has significant presence, develop a cultivation and marketing plan, facilitate the relationship and manage the deliverables.

7. Develop metrics for measuring success both during the formation of the foundation program and over the longer term.

8. Contribute to the development and maintenance of high quality, functional, and practical systems and procedures for the Philanthropy team. Report, document, and disseminate data and procedures across the Council.

9. Supervise Philanthropy team to ensure program stays on track to deliver unrestricted funds from individual donors and family foundations.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in philanthropy, communications, international affairs, public health, social sciences or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Minimum 8-10 years of related work experience.

2. Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with a broad range of constituents, including Board members, senior executive leaders, partners, and supporters. 

3. Proven track record of identifying prospects, building relationships and securing 6 to 7 figure funding from foundations. 

4. Proven ability to think critically, achieve results, manage multiple tasks, adhere to deadlines and work well under pressure both independently and as part of a team. 

5. Proven track record of advancing cross-organizational and strategic business initiatives.

6. Superior administrative and organizational capability including initiative, attention to detail, forward-planning and follow-through, ability to prioritize, and ability to work independently and efficiently. 

7. Strong computer literacy, including knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Salesforce or other comparable CRM software.

8. Knowledge of and experience in the international environment of the Council’s work, especially in low- and middle-income countries, and familiarity with international population, health, and development issues.

9. Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize information, including relevant research literature and data to support philanthropic cultivation and stewardship.

10. Demonstrates self-confidence, problem solving skills, and sense of humor and pragmatism to deal with challenges and multiple tasks. Pleasant, courteous, poised manner in all interactions with a people orientation. 

11. High level of discretion; ability to work in a confidential environment.

12. Ability to travel domestically and internationally (approximately 20% of time).
