Position description

The position is situated in the Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS) under the Emergency Specialist (Reporting/Global Appeals Manager).  The Office of Emergency Programmes has several objectives: (a) strengthen preparedness and timely, effective and efficient response to humanitarian crises in varied contexts; (b) strengthen sustained access for principled humanitarian assistance and protection for children affected by humanitarian crises; and (c) strengthen on strategic alliances, partnerships and advocacy for child-focused humanitarian action.

The position will support the EMOPS Director’s Office, specifically in the areas of data management, communications as well as in delivering on its corporate reporting accountabilities.  Under the supervision of and in regular consultation with the supervisor, support reports and data visualization, including web and graphic design. Support the delivery of EMOPS annual reports, as well as regular data aggregation of country humanitarian responses throughout the year for better accountability and fundraising through UNICEF’s humanitarian appeal (Humanitarian Action for Children) and for National Committee, donor, partner and other external audiences.

How can you make a difference?

The position is proposed to address existing gaps in EMOPS’s deliverables, specifically to (a) assist in coordination and data collation and analysis in support of UNICEF’s Global Humanitarian Action for Children appeal (b) regularly generate global aggregation of data to inform UNICEF’s ongoing performance in humanitarian action, which is currently only completed once annually for the launch of the Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) appeal; (b) support  allocation, tracking and utilization analysis of global humanitarian thematic funding for corporate reporting and resource mobilization (c) contribute to analysis for corporate reporting including for the Executive Director’s Annual Report and the Annual Results Report (Humanitarian Action); and (d) support development of additional products for use by senior EMOPS and UNICEF management (including the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Directors) during Executive Boards and other high level events, as well as for /resource mobilization and advocacy with donors.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities: 

  1. Assist in coordination and global aggregation of data (programme results and targets; financial) across humanitarian appeal countries (at the time of humanitarian appeal launch and throughout the year).
  2. Provide design capacity for the Humanitarian Action Study (HAS), Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) appeal and other EMOPS’ data visualizations, in line with organizational branding and guidance.
  3. Provide technical support for HAC team site and HAC online platform.
  4. Produce and maintain documents for regular tracking and reporting on Global Humanitarian Thematic Funding.
  5. Produce and update content on the Humanitarian Action for Children and emergencies websites (including migration to Drupal).
  6. Support divisional annual reporting.
  7. Support editing/drafting/proofreading of documents and presentations for senior management, Executive Board and other high-level events.
  8. Support the Director’s Office as needed.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • University degree in one of the following fields: social sciences, public administration, law, public health, nutrition, international relations, business administration, communication or other related disciplines.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional work experience at the national and/or international levels in programme/project development, planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation or administration.
  • Developing country work experience desirable including training/experience in emergency response management.
  • Strong  work experience of managing and presenting large datasets using advanced excel, design software (e.g. indesign) as well as maintaining sharepoint sites.
  • Fluency in  written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) language is an asset.
