Incumbent will serve as a Protocol and Visitor Coordinator with responsibility for the operational aspects of an effective visitors' program at serviced activities. Plans and coordinates a variety of activities associated with official and social functions and events. Applies a thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, practices, and techniques associated with the protocol function.

As a Protocol Coordinator, you will perform but not limited to the following duties:

  • Monitor visits to make adjustments without interruption or inconvenience to the visitor.
  • Coordinate with higher level staff members in planning specific phases of complex and highly visible command functions.
  • Develop itineraries requiring the incorporation of diverse elements of protocol.
  • Coordinate visit support requirements to finalize visit arrangements.
  • Determine source of funding for official entertainment in accordance with established regulations.
  • Develop coordinated plans for assigned visits and special events.
  • Analyze completed protocol actions to adjust procedures where necessary.
  • Prepare a detailed social plan when luncheons or dinners are held in conjunction with a visit.
  • Keep informed on all aspects of the mission in order to assemble pertinent itineraries.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year specialized experience determining protocol support requirements for Official Visits and Events; Develop in depth and complex itineraries that have accounted for particulars including visit intent, differing customs, billeting, transportation and arrangements for gift exchanges; Creating invites and developing seating charts based on precedence; Advising and/or, assisting in making recommendations to leadership based on protocol policies/guidelines (seating precedence, flag etiquette) 

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).


Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: International Affairs, International Relations, Sociology.


Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages
