Position description

GMF’s Leadership Programs promote leadership development through Fellowships, enrichment seminars for the 4000-strong alumni network, action grants awarded to alumni teams, the triennial alumni leadership retreats, and newly enhanced digital network and distance learning. The leadership fellowships include the Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF), Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network (TILN), and Manfred Wörner Seminar (MWS), Policy Designers Network (PDN) and Leadership Lab (LL).

The Guido Goldman Director of Leadership Programs is responsible for managing the program portfolio which includes five fellowships and a transatlantic network of +4,000 alumni, leading growth and execution of fellowships and alumni activities, overseeing quality and curriculum development for existing programs, and fundraising to support existing and new programs.

The Director manages the day-to-day activity of Leadership Programs with an annual budget of roughly $2M and a team of approx. 10 staff distributed across GMF’s American and European offices.

The Director serves as organizational thought leader on leadership development and non-profit capacity building, staying current on literature, practices and networks in relevant fields including training and professional development, leadership development, coaching, and diversity.

The Director seamlessly interacts with and navigates the private, public, and non-profit sectors, across varied industries and multiple leadership levels to grow and develop American and European established, mid-career, and next generation leaders who are committed to strengthening transatlantic relations.

The Director also serves as the key point of contact for GMF leadership, particularly the Executive Vice President.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support new and existing programs and growth of the Leadership Programs
  • Nurture and expand Leadership Programs’ existing relationships and develop new funder and partner relationships
  • Build and manage relationships on behalf of GMF
  • Navigate horizontally in the organization and create collaborative solutions across GMF offices and programs

Knowledge Management:

  • Develop and design strategy for leadership development initiatives; incorporate understanding of transatlantic affairs and GMF’s mission
  • Extensive experience in the facilitation of leadership development programs and courses for American and European leaders
  • Ensure the application of leadership development trends and best practices, in Europe and the United States, in leadership development initiatives and activities
  • Engage with cross-sector American and European leaders to understand their leadership and management development needs for input and the appropriate sponsorship, engagement and alignment
  • Translate business strategies into critical talent & workforce strategies/initiatives
  • Ensure the application of robust data analysis, reporting, budgeting and performance indicators suitable in a not-for-profit setting

Program and Staff Management

  • Ensure effective management of American and European culturally diverse staff
  • Develop and approve budgets and operations that fully support program excellence
  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and effective delivery of programs through focus on innovative development processes and curriculum
  • Leverage staff talent to develop necessary systems, processes and tools to ensure consistent, high-quality results to support learning and development

Knowledge and Skills Needed:

  • A minimum of 15 years experience developing, managing and scaling leadership development programs for cross-sectoral leaders
  • Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
  • Extensive experience in the facilitation of leadership development programs and courses for American and European leaders
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and revenue generation
  • Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods
  • A proactive, action-oriented, flexible leader
  • Ability to inspire, lead and work with composure, flexibility, and efficiency;
  • Ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities
  • Executive coaching experience desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and solid understanding of CRMs for best use
  • Solid understanding of international relations and transatlantic affairs
  • Professional certifications in executive education, project management, learning and development are a plus
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally


Bachelor’s degree; ideally MA degree or higher
