Position description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for broad duties related to the accounting function of the organization, including the review and preparation of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, audit and tax schedules, as well as other tasks as determined by the Director of Finance and Administration.



  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports; assist Director of Finance and Administration in preparation of reports for NPCA Board and Finance Committee

  • Prepare account reconciliations as assigned (i.e., revenue, accounts receivable, accruals, prepaid revenue, bank statements, etc.)

  • Maintain monthly closing checklist and collaborate with NPCA Director of Finance and Administration to ensure books are closed in a timely manner each month

  • Prepare annual audit and tax schedules and other analysis for assigned areas

  • Manage grant-related finance compliance requirements, including reporting, monthly drawdown/reimbursement requests, and assistance with indirect cost rate calculations and proposals, as needed

  • Serve as the finance department’s liaison to the Human Resources function as it relates to payroll processing and accounting for employee accrued leave balances

  • Prepare journal entries for Director of Finance and Administration review and approval

  • Perform the accounts payable function — i.e., enter into system, prepare checks, and maintain the accounts payable files

  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • 3+ years of non-profit experience, preferably with a 501(c)(3) organization. Public accounting experience preferred.  

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting 

  • CPA license preferred 

  • Knowledge of accounting theory and practice

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), especially as it relates to routine transactions

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Sage50 experience is a plus.

  • Attention to detail 

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications (written and oral) skills

  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

  • Ability to accurately apply professional knowledge, skills, expertise, and judgment to achieve excellent customer service in all interactions

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the team

  • Ability to communicate financial data with non-financial staff
