Position description

Do you have an innate understanding of the role of advocacy organisations in effecting change across Europe by influencing EU policy? Do you enjoy taking complex, technical issues and translating them into simple and persuasive policy messages? If so, you may be T&E’s next Freight Manager. Europe's leading clean transport think tank and campaign group, Transport & Environment (T&E), is currently seeking a highly motivated and proactive individual in the area of climate and commercial vehicles policy. This is a new role based in T&E’s Brussels office.

The position requires a person with a strong understanding of how to influence EU policy, the ability to think critically and strategically, as well as effective communication skills. Knowledge of the freight/road transport sector is desirable. The role will involve:

  • Carrying out EU policy campaigns and advocacy related to zero-emission road freight, notably around vans and truck CO2 emission standards;
  • Playing an instrumental role in T&E’s freight programme and assisting with policy and coalition work in the broad spectrum of zero-emission freight-related work streams;
  • Building coalitions, establishing and maintaining contact with policy-makers, NGOs, industry, and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Drafting policy papers (including support in defining T&E positions), preparing presentations, organising and participating in public meetings with policy and wider stakeholders, and providing feedback to relevant consultations;
  • Coordinating and liaising with T&E national network and members across Europe on freight campaigns;
  • Commissioning and delivering impactful research (both internally and externally) tailored to the needs of, and contributing to delivering the objectives of, T&E’s freight advocacy work.

The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in EU advocacy. Experience in the climate or road freight fields are a plus. In exceptional cases we can consider candidates with shorter work experience;
  • Proven ability to write in English fluently, accurately and concisely; strong written communication skills is a must;
  • A positive, can-do attitude with high autonomy levels and the capacity to run a policy campaign with limited supervision;
  • The ability to absorb and understand technical, economic and legal language, to independently develop new technical, economic or legal arguments and evidence, and use them to convince key stakeholders;
  • A solid grasp of EU policy-making processes;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and communicate complex issues clearly and with impact;
  • Project management experience and an ability to deliver to tight deadlines.

The successful candidate would ideally have:

  • A personal commitment to sustainable transport and the aims of T&E;
  • The ability to speak at least one other EU language fluently, preferably (but not necessarily) Italian.
