Position description

Columbia World Projects (CWP) mobilizes the university’s researchers and scholars to work with governments, organizations, businesses and communities to tackle global challenges. CWP devises projects that it staffs and operates with partners in New York City, across the United States, and around the world; hosts the Obama Foundation Scholars Program; and holds events and convenings that engage faculty, students, and community members in our larger mission to connect the worlds of knowledge and action.


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Special Initiatives Project Officer (SIPO) will be responsible for:

  • Managing a wide range of special initiatives designed to increase organizational impact and deepen collaboration across the organization,
  • Conducting targeted research and analysis to inform the development of strategic initiatives,
  • Supporting the development of new strategic systems, processes, and products,
  • Supporting the design, implementation, and refinement of knowledge management systems, processes, and activities,
  • Supporting the evaluation of special initiatives and proposing and implementing refinements to increase their impact,
  • Coordinating and planning for internal and external meetings, and documenting and following up on key action items,
  • Supporting the creation of presentations for both internal and external stakeholders,
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. Five plus years related experience required.

  • Advanced degree desirable,

  • Confidentiality and discretion are required,
  • Tact and good judgment in confidential situations and proven experience interacting with senior and executive management,
  • 3+ years’ experience in applying and communicating project management principles and processes,
  • Able to effectively partner with executive leaders in academic/technical organizations,
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships,
  • Strong record of managing multiple stakeholders, and a desire to deliver service excellence,
  • Positive outlook,
  • High degree of flexibility, adapting to the organization’s priorities,
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills including strategically analyzing data and diagnosing opportunities/interventions,
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail,
  • Ability to effectively function with limited direction,
  • Results oriented yet with a tolerance for ambiguity and change,
  • Advanced competence in the use of software programs (Google Suite, Microsoft Office),
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously,
  • Ability to present complex material in a digestible, consumable manner to all levels of management,
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and across all organizational levels, where flexibility, collaboration, and adaptability are important,
  • Knowledge and understanding of Information Technology delivery.
