Position description

The Asia Pacific Regional Director is the WJP's lead representative in the region, responsible for designing, executing and coordinating a range of WJP rule of law activities, including: regional knowledge and capacity-building, networking, events, media relations and fundraising in the region. This person will report to the Chief Engagement Officer and the Executive Director. This person also will work closely with the Board of Directors of WJP Ltd. (WJP's Singapore-based subsidiary) and WJP's team based in Washington, DC. The position will be based in Singapore, with regular regional and international travel, when travel is possible.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



As the lead representative for developing WJP activities in the Asia Pacific region, this position will serve as the main point of contact for advancing WJP's goals to generate knowledge, raise awareness and stimulate action to strengthen the rule of law in the region

Write occasional content pieces on pertinent regional rule of law matters for WJP blog or other communications uses

Assist with identification of and communication with legal and public health experts from around the region to participate in WJP Rule of Law Index data collection and dissemination

Stay abreast of rule of law-related trends and developments through relevant reading, attendance at conferences, and networking, and provide regular updates to WJP leadership



Incoordination with Chief Engagement Officer and Executive Director, develop short- and long-term strategies for cultivating relationships with key stakeholders in the Asia Pacific region

Identify and cultivate key government, business, legal, academic and civil society leaders throughout the Asia Pacific region

Develop and maintain close relationships with peer organizations and individuals through regular contact and visits, when travel is possible

Introduce the work of the WJP to key multi-disciplinary stakeholders, and provide opportunities for them to engage directly with various aspects of the WJP's work, including the World Justice Forum and the World Justice Challenge

Work closely with the Board of Directors of WJP Ltd. to support their outreach on behalf of the organization



Provide advance planning and logistical support to events team for meetings in the Asia Pacific region, including facilities evaluation; cultivation of local partner institutions; speaker and participant identification; topical content development; sponsorship prospects; and advice regarding culture and protocol

Lead the convening of at least two major events in Asia Pacific to be held before June 2024



Identify and cultivate relationships with key members of the national and international press around the Asia Pacific region

Support Chief Communications Officer in media-related activities around the region, e.g., around the WJP Rule of Law Index.



Work in close coordination with WJP Chief Development Officer in identifying potential fundraising opportunities within the Asia Pacific Region

Introduce donor prospects to the work of the WJP

Support grant writing and reporting activities



Manage all governance, financial and administrative aspects of WJP's Asia-Pacific office in coordination with relevant WJP functional teams and local service providers.

Support the WJP Ltd Board of Directors in its governance functions.








  • At least seven years' experience in non-profit, legal, academic, government or corporate external relations, a significant portion of which involved working with Asia Pacific government officials and other stakeholders
  • Three years' experience working in the Asia Pacific region, preferably in Singapore
  • Experience working on issues relating to WJP's rule of law mission, including anti-corruption, governance, human rights, criminal and civil justice;
  • In-depth understanding of regional political relationships and power structures at all levels of society
  • A strong track record of relationship-building with both senior leaders and practitioners in multiple fields
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as the organization's spokesperson – on both mission and activities – at the highest levels (Ministerial, Chief Executive, Dean, Bureau Chief, etc.)
  • Schedule, experience and flexibility to travel regularly in the Asia Pacific region and at least twice annually to Europe or the U.S. when travel is possible
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams separated geographically and in different time-zones
  • Ability to distill complex cultural and historical context for non-native audiences
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Established networks among government, civil society, business, academic and legal communities in the region a considerable advantage
  • Legal right to work in Singapore without any restrictions
  • Reading, writing, and speaking English; additional regional languages a plus

University degree in public policy, law, political science, international relations or related field or equivalent experience.


Physical Requirements


While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is frequently required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. Also may need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, grasp objects, including a writing instrument, stand, communicate verbally and hear well enough to detect nuances and receive detailed information. The employee may be required to walk, push or pull objects, bend, squat, reach, or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for expansive reading and data analysis.
