European Journalism Centre (EJC) is an independent Dutch non-profit based in the city of Maastricht, The Netherlands and has a small office in Brussels. Founded in 1992 it has been working independently and successfully to support, strengthen and develop journalism. 

The essence of the work of journalists is to provide people with reliable, trustworthy and verified information so they can make the best possible decisions about their lives, communities, governments, and societies. We exist to help them do that.

Our mission is to strengthen the resilience of European journalism and progressive media by connecting journalists and media to new ideas, nurturing communities, making available a wide range of unique experiences, providing grants and skills development, and producing resources and training affordable or for free. 

Our aim is that every journalist and news organisation shall benefit from an EJC programme or initiative. EJC embraces innovation and positive changes within the industry and is optimistic about the many exciting developments taking place across the media landscape in regards to new business models, new formats and technology.

What will you be doing? 

The Director of Programmes, Outreach and Impact will serve as a critical member of the EJC leadership. In collaboration with the Managing Director, the Programme Director will articulate and implement the strategic vision and leadership of the organisation’s programme services and products. 

  • Reporting to the Managing Director, this role will collaborate in directly shaping our overall organisational strategy and theory of change. The Programme Director will consistently provide insights, ideas and advice to support in driving, shaping and amplifying our work;

  • Lead initiatives to evaluate, refine and innovate our programmes to ensure our work is of high quality & impact and directly aligned to our strategy;

  • Proactively stay well informed, networked and abreast with key trends and players in the space;

  • Oversee programme implementation by working closely with Programme Leads on work planning, budgeting and tracking to ensure we have the capacity and resources to deliver our goals;

  • Supervise all internal and funder programme reporting by preparing, coordinating and reviewing all programme reports;

  • Provide technical input and strategic recommendations for programme design & proposal writing;

  • Engage with our donors as required - providing programme updates and ensuring continuous & consistent building of trust based relationships with all partners and donors;

  • Oversee and manage stakeholder relations, identify and recommend partnerships with relevant stakeholders to the Managing Director and participate in expansion activities (fundraising, partnership-building, donor relations);

  • Review and assess budgeting and financial procedures for programmes and fundraising in consultation with the Managing Director and Finance Director.

 You will lead together with the Finance Director and HR Director, while supervised by the Managing Director.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree in public administration, education, social work, or a related field is desired;

  • You are a natural relationship builder. You have experience in leading diverse teams, engaging community partners, and partnering with a Managing Director and board;

  • Vast experience in leading social impact programmes, from concept/design, to planning, to overseeing implementation, tracking, evaluating and reporting;

  • Passion for EJC’s mission and purpose and commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness and empowerment;

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to represent the EJC externally across a wide range of stakeholders and constituencies;

  • You are a charismatic storyteller who can take donors, government actors and partners on a journey with you;

  • Demonstrated experience managing a team across multiple services to include professional development and mentorship;

  • Comprehensive working knowledge of programme planning, organisational structure, budgeting, administrative operations, and fundraising.

The EJC team currently consists of 16 people, with 8 staff members in the Programmes team and 3 freelance team members. You will be leading a team of, currently, 5 persons and providing mentoring, guidance, supervision, and professional development to staff. The majority of our team works from our office in Maastricht (The Netherlands). 


To be able to carry out the position of Director of Programmes, Outreach and Impact we ask you to work from the Maastricht office for at least three days a week.
