The Policy Academy was launched in 2020 as a global leadership program to provide development opportunities for top internal or external talent to lead efforts, to effect positive change for patients and animals globally while providing key bandwidth support for Global Public Policy priorities. The Policy Academy focuses on early career professionals who wish to grow as future global leaders.


Throughout their time in the program, Associates are supported by staff at the Knowledge and Innovation Hub (KIH), an internal center of excellence that provides solutions that support MSD/Merck’s public policy professionals globally, including management of the Policy Academy. Program benefits include:

The successful candidate will commence two 10–12-month assignments. In support of our global business, the Associate may be located in a variety of geographies dependent upon a number of factors including, but not limited to: participant interest and skillset, developmental needs and business needs.


Prior to completion of the program, it will be the responsibility of each Associate to leverage their learnings, skills and network from their Policy Academy experience to identify a post-program role within the Company that aligns with business needs. The Knowledge and Innovation Hub (KIH) team and the primary manager will support this effort as well.

Position Qualifications


Education Minimum Requirement: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, International Relations and/or Public Health, Animal Science, Veterinary Science.

  • Master's Degree / PhD / PharmD / JD would be a plus (not required).


Required Experience and Skills: 

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a policy role or a policy related role .

  • Superior communication, policy analysis, presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Strong capacity for leadership and cross-functional teamwork in a diverse work environment

  • Ability to take initiative, responsibility and demonstrate results-oriented project management

  • High drive and commitment to professionally develop through a growth mindset at our Company

  • Ability to travel as the business demands; typically up to 30%.

  • Fluency in English Language.

  • Must be fully mobile; willing to relocate; and pursue different geographic opportunities.

  • Commitment to patients/animals and Company mission


Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Professional experience in a related role in pharmaceutical industry, trade association, business, NGO or government

  • Fluency in an additional language other than English

  • Strong business/financial acumen in private sector setting

  • Demonstrated project management skills, problem solving under pressure and strong desire to drive initiatives forward

  • Deep interest in healthcare, animal health, policy, political science, international relations and/or communications
