Position description

Chemonics International, an international development firm based in Washington, D.C., seeks a deputy project director for the anticipated five-year, $190-213 million Reaching Every At-risk Community and Household with Malaria Services (REACH Malaria) global activity managed from Washington, DC. This program aims to support the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), as well as U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Missions and Bureaus with malaria programs, to provide implementation support services and technical assistance to countries to accelerate progress in comprehensive delivery of facility and community-based malaria services, including malaria case management, prevention of malaria in pregnancy (MiP), seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), health systems strengthening, data collection and use for service delivery, and other malaria prevention interventions. The Deputy Project Director ensures coordination and collaboration across project operations areas, between headquarters and the field, thereby promoting a comprehensive approach to REACH activities. The deputy project director supports the REACH project director by providing sufficient management coverage to field and headquarter staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the project director to provide management oversight and technical direction for private sector engagement activities;
  • Responsible for supporting quality implementation of day-to-day project activities, including financial accountability, staffing, work planning, and reporting;
  • Represents the project director, as necessary, to USAID, implementing partners, host country governments, project stakeholders, and counterparts in the public and private sectors;
  • Supervises senior management team, technical and administrative staff, and subcontractors;
  • Monitors programmatic, financial, and administrative performance;
  • Identifies issues and risks related to project implementation in a timely manner and appropriate program adjustments;
  • Provides overall leadership and supervision of finance and administrative staff, and others as assigned;
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of project management, or technically relevant work experience;
  • Master’s degree or higher in public health, business administration, international development, or a related advanced degree;
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in designing, implementing, and managing large, complex public health projects in/for developing countries;
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and coordinating diverse teams and individuals;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills that will enhance coordination and collaboration throughout the project;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills; proven diplomatic and public relations skills;
  • Fluency in written/spoken English; knowledge of French, Spanish, or Portuguese preferred.
