Position description

The overall aim/mission of the Africa-Europe Diaspora Development Platform (ADEPT) is to `amplify the influence and impact of African diaspora individuals and development organisations in Africa and Europe'. This aim is pursued through delivery of a range of services to diaspora organisations and individuals in Europe and Africa. ADEPT's work covers 85 countries (27 EU countries, plus United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway, and 55 African countries). In particular, ADEPT assists African Diaspora-Development Organisations (ADDOs) to:

  • Optimise their development engagement in Africa
  • Professionalise their organisations and activities
  • Create effective partnerships in Europe and Africa
  • Expand and improve their development activities in Africa
  • Influence the policy and practice of development cooperation.

  • UN-ECOSOC status : In early 2022, ADEPT was granted ¿special consultative¿ status by the United Nation Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). ADEPT wants to continue representing African diaspora organisations and individuals as a member of ECOSOC. It seeks to echo their ambitions, solutions and concerns.
  • EU-AU partnership : ADEPT has a special relationship with the African Union (AU), where it officially represents civil society through CIDO.

European government support : ADEPT has had significant support from Switzerland (from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation - SDC), Netherlands and Germany (GIZ) and from the European Union through ICMPD - International Centre for Migration Policy Development. The EU has been a key supporter of ADEPT since day one.

Diaspora Network - Representativeness : ADEPT has a network of over 200 African diaspora organisations and individuals based in Europe. We support development projects in 39 countries in Africa through our members. Bridging the gap between the two continents, ADEPT members are active in the EU and AU member states, as well as in Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.

  • Engaging youth : In 2021, ADEPT organised its first ever ¿Diaspora Youth Talk Award¿. A pitch competition to which more than 20 diaspora participants from all over Europe applied.
  • Global civil society : ADEPT is a member of the Global Civil Society Action Committee (AC) on Migration and AC members work towards three primary objectives:
  • timely and strategic information-sharing on global migration policy and governance,
  • collective and coherent civil society strategizing and action,
  • Increasing and democratising access for civil society engagement at all levels of global migration policy and governance.
  • High level dialogues : Through Diaspora Development Dialogue (DDD) events, Adept has established a working relationship with a number of governments in Europe and Africa, including Austria, Cameroon, France, Denmark, Gambia, Ghana, Germany, Kenia, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Senegal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands. Institutional support is also worth mentioning: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Bank, International Organization for Migration (IOM), and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
  • Global Compact Migration (objective 19): ADEPT will continue to play an important role in the effective implementation on the GCM objective 19: Create conditions for migrants and diasporas to fully contribute to sustainable development in all countries.
