Position description

Salary: $60,000/year 

Peace Direct is dedicated to stopping wars, one person at a time. In conflict zones around the world, we support local people to stop violence and build long-term peace. 

Role Purpose: 

Working closely with the US Executive Director and Peace Direct’s global Fundraising and Communications team, the Fundraising Officer will lead on the delivery of Peace Direct’s fundraising strategy in the US, including individual and major donor giving, digital fundraising & marketing, and support around corporate fundraising.  The Fundraising Officer will help identify the audiences who will support Peace Direct’s work, develop content that will compel them to take notice, and create engaging actions to encourage them to get involved and support our work. 

You will devise, plan, deliver and measure activity across a range of channels. You will work closely with all members of the Fundraising and Communications team to grow the number of people, companies, and foundations supporting Peace Direct and the funds we raise to enable more lifesaving and life-changing peacebuilding work run by local people in communities around the world. 

You will also work with the Policy and Research team to grow the reach of our innovative online consultation tool, Platform4Dialogue and our other evergreen innovative peace technology products such as our Conflict Transformation Course, and Peace Insights blog and mapping resources, with an eye toward innovative income opportunities for Peace Direct.  


Key responsibilities:   

Create and deliver inspiring ways to attract new supporters and engage current supporters 

  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for financial sustainability in the US, with a focus on increasing unrestricted funding from individual and major donor giving, digital fundraising & marketing, corporate sponsors and other innovative income streams 
  • Deliver annual fundraising events one to two times a year, including all elements from securing honorees and sponsorships to board engagement and overseeing event planning, to securing RSVPs and donations 
  • Deepen engagement with members of the U.S. Board of Directors to expand their fundraising efforts 
  • Develop appeals for US audiences via print, social media, and other components in coordination with the US Executive Director, Senior Digital and Fundraising Officer, Database Officer, and others. Work with the whole F&C team to ensure coordinated coverage across all channels during appeal moments 
  • Create fundraising materials to engage and inspire supporters for use in corporate, major donor, individual, foundations, and digital outreach  
  • Respond to fundraising and supporter inquiries, and find creative ways to acknowledge their support  
  • Work closely with members of the team to ensure we have a strong pipeline of quality, ethically sourced stories, images and content for appeals, pitches and other donor communications 
  • Engage the US Executive Director and the Chief Executive Officer in donor stewardship and cultivation as needed to achieve US fundraising goals 


Individual and major donor fundraising: 

  • Establish and manage major donor fundraising program, working closely with the US Executive Director and Head of Fundraising and Communications to engage with major donors 
  • Manage strategy and execution of individual major donor program to bring in approximately $75,000 in contributions per year, overseeing prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors 
  • Manage our existing regular giving program, finding creative and inspiring ways to deepen supporter engagement including through events both in person and virtual 
  • Establish a program to increase income through regular gifts 
  • Identify supporters from our database and other sources who may be able to donate to Peace Direct at a higher level, finding ways to engage them and inspire giving 


Use data to provide insight and grow income: 

  • Lead on the monitoring of supporter attrition, responding proactively to mitigate a reduction in support 
  • Contribute to creating and monitoring budgets for fundraising activities, and share regular reports 
  • Ensure all fundraising and supporter activity is set up in such a way that objectives are clear from the outset, success can be measured, tracked and recommendations on future activity are well informed 
  • Work closely with the Database Officer to ensure supporter information, communications and income are recorded accurately on Salesforce  
  • Work closely with the Database Officer to ensure aligned tracking and reporting in Salesforce 


  • Lend support around corporate fundraising efforts as directed by the US Executive Director and Head of Fundraising and Communications  
  • Work closely with the UK team around digital outreach and solicitation program to engage US-based mid-level and small-dollar donors, achieving at least $25,000 in new gifts from these populations per year over the next three years  
  • Ensure a collaborative approach to our fundraising, where appropriate, between our US and UK offices 
  • Be proactive in identifying other opportunities to help extend our reach and maximize income where capacity allows 
  • Ensure all activity supports Peace Direct’s 5-year strategy (now in year four of five), new strategic direction as that becomes available, and DEI strategy 
  • Perform all other duties relevant to the post 


  • The position is based at the Peace Direct office in Washington, DC 
  • Peace Direct has a hybrid working arrangement in place (office & home working) 
  • Flexible working can be considered 
  • Occasional out-of-hours work may be required 
  • Occasional travel may be required 

Person specification: 

Technical skills/experience 

  • 3 years of experience in fundraising and/ or communications role 
  • Proven experience of working in a fundraising or marketing role, or equivalent 
  • Experience developing, organizing and delivering appeals, campaigns and pitches 
  • Experience organizing events (in-person and hybrid events) 
  • Experience developing new relationships with groups or individuals  
  • Proven experience meeting and exceeding targets from a variety of sources  
  • Experience using Salesforce or other CRM, and an understanding of building relationships between different types of data 
  • Ability to write high-quality compelling copy, aimed at different audiences and encouraging positive action 
  • Experience using storytelling techniques for fundraising and supporter engagement 
  • Experience planning and managing budgets 
  • Management of external vendors and suppliers – for example fundraising agencies or print companies 
  • Excellent numeracy skills 
  • Excellent written and spoken English 
  • Strong Excel skills with the ability to manipulate or clean spreadsheet data, as well as key tasks such as basic formulas and vlookups 
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, Mailchimp, Adobe Photoshop, MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel

Business development and marketing 

  • Leading the promotion, marketing, and sales of our online consultation platform, Platform4Dialogue, to ensure we maximize its income-generating potential. 
  • Management of paid search and our Google Grants account. Working closely with the Communications Officer to ensure maximized spend from this grant and improved conversion of web visits.  


  • Sourcing images and video content, ensuring suitable systems and processes for storage are in place. 
  • Working with the Database Officer to develop and monitor tracking systems that will enable accurate evaluation of the cost-effectiveness and value of all digital activities, using Google Analytics, Mailchimp Analytics, and other tools. Using A/B testing and adjusting activity to continually increase the quantity and quality of digital engagement. 
  • Supporting offline fundraising efforts as required.

  • Perform any other tasks as directed by the US Executive Director and the Head of Fundraising and Communications

Compensation Package: $60,000/year, health care, sick leave, family leave, and generous vacation (20 days/year), and retirement package.
