Position description
Role location: The ideal candidate would be situated within commuting distance from either our Cape Town, South Africa HQ or our Washington, DC, USA offices. We are however open to candidates located anywhere within South Africa and the US East Coast
Remote work: Currently our Group Shared Services staff only work from the office once a week (day is dependent on the team), the rest of the week is option WFH. For candidates not located within commuting distance from our of our offices, will be considered for full remote set ups.
Purpose of the position
The Business Development Specialist (BDS) will engage with global, regional, country, and technical staff throughout the business development cycle from opportunity tracking and capture planning to proposal development and submission. The BDS will support the full range of proposal development activities, including serving as proposal manager. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of working on large-scale and complex new business efforts in international development with particular emphasis on US government (USAID, CDC, MCC).
Key Accountabilities
- Work closely with the Director of Business Development and the BroadReach growth team to achieve BroadReach’s growth targets
- Support proposal efforts from opportunity identification to solicitation release to submission, ensuring compliance with donor rules and BroadReach’s business development processes and practices
- Support identification of opportunities and growth of bid pipeline, preparation of capture plans, consolidate bid assessments and process approvals, facilitate strategy meetings, ensure quality assurance processes through color team reviews, and develop non-technical sections of the proposal (management plan, capability statements, etc.)
- Manage relationships with proposal partners and liaise with other activities such as recruitment and pricing
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of USG (USAID, CDC, MCC) and other key donor priorities in BroadReach’s focus technical areas and geographies, providing guidance to country, regional, and technical teams
- Model the use of standardized business development processes, tools, and templates
- Support the update of key process documentation and contribute to the provision of accurate, timely information to support business development decisions
- Oversee BroadReach’s business intelligence tracking efforts
Qualifications
Essential qualifications
- Bachelors Degree (with 5 years experience) OR Masters Degree (with 2 years experience)
Desirable qualifications
- Master’s or post-graduate business degree
Experience & skills
- At least five years of experience (with a bachelors, or 2 years with a masters) in proposal preparation and management of public sector RFP/RFAs/Tenders
- Experience with and a successful track record managing proposal teams
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and concisely
- Subject-matter expertise in international development or public health
- Experience working with USG government donors (USAID, CDC, MCC) or other key donors (EU institutions, FCDO)
- Fluency in English
- Proficiency in at least one other language (French, Portuguese) is a plus
- Familiarity with graphic design software, data visualization, and infographics, is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in remote teams; outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully manage a variety of relationships in a multicultural environment
- Flexible work attitude: the ability to work in a team environment and independently, and to meet unexpected demands, prioritize, and multitask
- Ability to travel internationally as needed for capture or proposal preparation trips (up to 20% of time)
