Position description

Oxfam International is looking for an enthusiastic and well-organized trainee to support our work on issues ranging from humanitarian issues through creative and strategic media and communications work.

Through this internship, you will gain hands-on experience working with an advocacy team of a leading international non-governmental organization. You will develop skills in media engagement, web and social media outreach, and project management. You will also acquire practical knowledge of Oxfam’s advocacy engagement with the United Nations.

Key responsibilities
• Help design, develop, and implement Oxfam International, New York (OINY) internal and
external media and communications strategies.
• Keep OINY/Head of Office social media accounts up-to-date, create social media content, and
help identify opportunities for social media engagement.
• Support the communication needs of the team during key UN mo ments High Level Political
Forum (HLPF) (July 8-17, 2024) United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Summit of
the Future (September 10-24, 2024).
• Draft internal communications reports contributing to the weekly and monthly internal
newsletter.
• Conduct media monitoring and analysis, as requested.
• Ensure that New York Oxfam International’s website is up to date.
• Liaise with Manager of Media Relations to help organize advocacy and media events
• Update database with media contacts
Our next Media and Communications Assistant will require a range of skills and experience.
• Expected experience level: zero to one-year of experience.
• Candidates should show a strong interest in how media, communications, and politics can help
achieve change in the world.
• Excellent written and oral English language skills. Good knowledge of other major languages is
a plus.
• Some previous work experience or volunteering, especially in social media and/or journalism,
is desirable.
• Candidates must be effective team players with the ability to work and think independently, be
resourceful and proactive.
• Candidates must be organised and be able to multi-task.
• A strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) is a must; social media,
layout/design, photo and/or video editing as well as multimedia skills are highly desirable.
• Basic knowledge of UN processes is a plus.

Qualifications

This role will give you an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a busy NGO working to influence UN policy and gain exposure to many aspects of Oxfam International’s New York Office’s advocacy work and activities in the context of the worldwide Oxfam confederation.
