Position description

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) was established by Congress as an independent and objective office to promote economy and effectiveness and to prevent and detect waste, fraud, and abuse. The OIG conducts audits, investigations, and inspections of the Department's programs and operations and recommends ways for DHS to carry out its responsibilities in the most effective and efficient manner. This position is in the IT Audit Division of the Office of Audits. This division contains over 50 Auditors and IT Specialists that work together to identify deficiencies and make recommendations for improving DHS' IT performance, management, and security. IT Audits conducts cybersecurity oversight work that helps DHS components maintain secure IT systems and infrastructure, as well as a broad range of performance audits to determine whether DHS’ IT assets are reliable, accessible, and adequate to support mission operations.

Duties

The successful candidate will work in a team environment to help conduct research, data gathering, and analysis of DHS’ programs, functions, management, and operations. As a team member, the incumbent will conduct broad program assignments requiring integrated analysis of DHS’ programs and operations. Candidates should be critical thinkers, detail-oriented, and capable of supporting multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be competent communicators, both verbally and in writing, and should be capable of conducting research, analysis, and writing to convey results of audit analysis assignments. Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Evaluating programs and operations to determine their level of effectiveness, efficiency, and level to which they provide desired objectives and results. 
  • Researching and prepare proposals for future department-wide audits, inspections and evaluations and/or investigations. 
  • Assuring that work papers are prepared in accordance with OIG audit procedures and other appropriate guidance. 
  • Developing new approaches where no precedents exist and/or developing creative solutions to controversial problems. 
  • Preparing various types of reports, briefings, and testimony that cover all major management aspects of DHS programs.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you should have a degree in a related field such as Public Administration, Systems Engineering, Business Administration, etc. The incumbent will support audit teams by conducting day to day tasks to plan and execute audits and evaluations of DHS information and technology management programs and operations to determine effectiveness, efficiency, and achievement of DHS mission.
