Position description

The Friends Committee on National Legislation seeks a full-time Advocacy Team Organizer to support new and prospective members of FCNL’s Advocacy Teams to develop deep advocacy skills and connect with the national network of 1400 people already working in 135 Advocacy Teams around the country. This position reports to the Senior Advocacy Team Manager and is part of the Strategic Advocacy Team. 

The Advocacy Team Organizer is responsible for all aspects of recruiting and launching 10-20 Advocacy Teams each year, as well as helping to recruit and retain people to participate in this deep advocacy work. The organizer spends significant time on the phone, on Zoom calls, and traveling to lead in-person workshops in communities across the country. 

In addition to launching new teams, the organizer supports existing teams and develops strategies for nurturing the community of people in these teams. Other duties include hosting info sessions on Zoom, supporting existing teams to recruit new members, and other duties that strengthen the network.   

 

Essential Job Duties

Advocacy Teams 

  • Meet recruitment goals to launch 10-20 teams a year in collaboration with the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager and the rest of FCNL staff.  This will include: 
  • Cultivate leads: Build relationships with new potential advocates who contact FCNL directly or are referred to us. Connect advocates near existing teams with their team leader (Communicator). Help other leads interested in starting their own team to organize an Advocacy Team in their community. 
  • Host committees: The organizer will facilitate a 1-hour info and organizing session with each group forming an Advocacy Team. Each host committee call requires preparation and follow-up.  
  • Launch workshop: The organizer will travel to the advocates’ community to launch an Advocacy Team through a one-time, 3-hour workshop. After each launch workshop, the organizer will go through follow up procedures to report back to FCNL about contacts in the field.  
  • Serve as backup trainer for new Advocacy Teams for their 3 or 4 part new team training series, as needed.  
  • Each step of the process requires specific follow up procedures including prep and follow up, support with recruitment, general email correspondence, and more.  
  • Build, maintain, and grow a structure of distributed, grassroots recruitment and leadership 
  • Recruit a working group of 5-10 volunteer organizers from existing Advocacy Teams (at least one in each region): The volunteer organizers will use their own ingenuity and expertise as well as FCNL’s recruitment tools and resources to identify and recruit local team leads. 
  • Develop and run regular training and support calls for volunteer organizers. Support them to recruit leads and assist with the team launch process. 

 

Service to the Larger Advocacy Team Program  

  • Host information sessions on Zoom for people interested in the Advocacy Teams program 
  • Support broader Strata recruitment calls, such as Intro to Advocacy 
  • Meet with existing teams, statewide networks, and regional anchors to brainstorm new places to start teams in their state 
  • Provide training and support as teams engage in recruitment 
  • Support the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager in the creation of content and training for teams, including leading occasional training on calls. 
  • Provide information about teams to support monthly programming as requested

Qualifications

  • Two to three years of experience in grassroots organizing on peace and justice issues; 
  • Demonstrated experience in volunteer training and leadership development; 
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and workshop facilitation; 
  • Ability to speak from your own experience to inspire volunteers to engage in deep advocacy; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to build and maintain relationships with individuals from various backgrounds. 
  • Ability to travel up to 60% of the time to launch new teams across the country; 
  • Exceptional skills in organization, time management, and attention to detail; 
  • Ability to work with a team remotely, share updated reports with colleagues, and work collaboratively with a virtual team as well as independently; 
  • Comfortable working in an environment that reflects the Quaker testimonies of peace, equality, simplicity, and truth, and working within the Quaker process of FCNL;   
  • Agreement with FCNL’s policy positions and understanding of a faith-based perspective toward legislative advocacy. 

 

Preferred Job Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience 
  • Demonstrated track record and/or interest in U.S. foreign policy, militarism in the U.S. and abroad, and peacebuilding;  

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment 

  • Frequently required to sit or stand for long periods. 
  • This job requires frequent travel, including overnight travel within the U.S. about 60% of the time. 

 

Work Expectations  

  • The anticipated compensation range for candidates in DMV is $61,500 to $65,000 to per year. The final compensation package offered to a successful candidate and placement within the pay grade will be dependent on the candidate’s specific background and qualifications and equilibrium with our internal equity. FCNL is a multi-state employer, and this pay scale may not reflect salary ranges in other states or locations outside of the DMV.

  • Work Week: The Advocacy Team Organizer’s schedule is never routine, and the workweek is highly variable within a 37.5-hour average workweek. There is a travel expectation of up to 60% with some evening and weekend work required. Some compensatory time may balance evening and weekend work and travel. This position can either be in the office or 100% remote. The employee will work with the supervisor to determine the in-office or telework arrangement. There may be times when the employee is required to come into the office for meetings, events, or to complete special projects. Annually this individual will need to be available for in-person support at Annual Meeting/QPPI conference during November 13-17,2024 and Spring Lobby Weekend conference in March 2025.
