Position description

When Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she was determined to use her global platform to continue to build peace in Liberia and beyond. In 2012, the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) was formed in Liberia to provide outstanding education and leadership opportunities to women and youth as the next generation of peacemakers and democratic leaders. GPFA supports more than 100 Liberian students each year through scholarships, indirectly supports thousands more through its investment in a network of partnership schools across Liberia, and equips and resources the feminist peace movement in Liberia. Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa-USA (GPFA-USA), its sister organization was formed in New York as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to build a global community of support around the programming of GPFA and to share the teachings of Leymah Gbowee, who has dedicated her life to women’s rights and peacebuilding. Since 2016, GPFA-USA has raised over $5 million from US individuals and foundations to support education, leadership development, and community programs in Liberia. GPFA-USA has also supported Leymah Gbowee’s advocacy in forums such as the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Development Goals Advocates, the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council, and the World Refugee Council.

About the Role

This full-time position is an integral part of a small, dynamic staff team, working closely with an active board of directors to support the mission and programs of GPFA-USA. The ideal candidate with a strong background in research, writing, and relationship management will have a passion for building resources to advance social change efforts. The role involves coordinating travel, supporting fundraising efforts, managing program and administrative tasks, and managing digital communications. Candidates must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and a collaborative spirit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel Coordination
    • Accompany Ms. Gbowee to select speaking engagements, funder, and partner meetings, with up to 20% travel, including potential international trips.
  • Fundraising and Reporting
    • Collaborate with the Program & Operations Manager and Liberia team on fundraising, reporting, andcommunications.
    • Identify potential donors from speaking engagements and share with leadership.
    • Review and edit proposals, donor reports, and correspondence.
  • Program and Administrative Support
    • Support the Program & Operations Manager with program-related activities.
    • Provide coordination and logistical support for programs, meetings, and events.
    • Support the implementation of new and existing programs and opportunities.
    • Check mail, deposit checks, and route relevant items to the Program & Operations Manager.
  • Communications and Digital Media Management
    • Work with the Program & Operations Manager to:
    • Manage and update the organization's website and project sites.
    • Create and distribute updates to stakeholders and partners.
    • Draft content for social media and develop strategies to boost engagement.
    • Draft and edit communications materials, including the e-newsletter.

Required Experience and Skills

  • 2-4 years of experience in fundraising, relationship management, and communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for drafting and editing proposals, donor reports, and correspondence.
  • Strong organizational skills including attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in managing and updating websites.
  • Ability to develop and implement social media strategies.
  • Proficient in using office software (e.g., MS Office, Google Suite) and social media management tools.
  • Basic understanding of fundraising principles and donor relationship management.
  • Ability to provide logistical support and coordinate events.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team in the USA and Liberia.
  • Flexibility to travel including to Liberia and attend events as required.
  • Capacity to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Salary and Location

The salary range for this role is $55,000-$65,000 (dependent on experience), and benefits include a monthly health insurance stipend and generous PTO. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. GPFA-USA has a hybrid office space available in NYC, with an expectation of 1-2 days per week in the office.
