Position description

The University of South Carolina Union invites applications for a 9-month, full-time Assistant Professor of Political Science. Teaching requirements include face-to-face and distance education, potentially including evening and/or weekend classes, along with teaching dual-enrollment classes at the USC Union campus and various affiliated high schools. This role will entail instructing twelve credit hours (four courses) per semester, with the possibility of a course release while pursuing tenure and promotion. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, as well as participation in university and community service, is expected. The selected candidate will have the responsibility of teaching introductory political science courses. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching upper-level courses in American politics as needed.

Demonstrated dedication to exceptional teaching, scholarly pursuits, and engagement with both the campus and local community is essential. Excellent communication skills, a commitment to fostering collegial relationships, and a strong dedication to undergraduate education are required.

USC Union, as a campus of Palmetto College of the University of South Carolina, offers associate in arts and science degrees. Faculty members may teach courses for bachelor’s degree programs in Organizational Leadership and Liberal studies, as well as other Palmetto College programs.

The faculty member will be responsible for the following:

  • Teaching assigned classes where needed under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes.
  • Teaching twelve credit hours (four courses) per semester (with the possibility of a course release while pursuing tenure and promotion).
  • Advising students; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance and student co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstration of published work and a forward-looking research plan are required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Candidates must possess a doctorate in political science or a related field (with at least 18 earned graduate hours in political science) from an accredited university by the beginning date of employment, including credentials necessary for departmental approval to teach introductory and upper-level courses as needed. ABD candidates meeting the same qualifications will be considered for an interview but must have a terminal degree in hand by the time of appointment.
