Position description

Public interest work relies on a strong development capacity to raise funding from diverse sources and via a wide range of approaches. Quincy Institute is a young organization and is still building out its development department. This is a great opportunity for someone who has a passion for QI’s mission. This senior associate requires strategic mindedness, clear and compelling writing and editing, creativity, and social intelligence. This associate will report to QI’s director of development.

The senior development associate will support the Director of Development across all facets of fundraising—from prospect research and donor engagement to data management and proposal writing. The ideal candidate brings strategic thinking, strong writing and editing skills, creativity, and interpersonal intelligence. This associate position requires close collaboration with staff across the organization to translate QI’s work into compelling narratives for donors and funders.

Responsibilities
 

  • Manage QI’s donor management system (Raiser’s Edge, experience preferred) and email distribution system (Mailchimp preferred), including donor record maintenance and production of custom report generation
  • Assist with financial reporting and analysis related to fundraising, reconciliation and donor recognition
  • Maintain and generate lists for email campaigns, event invitations, program updates and the annual report
  • Ensure timely processing and delivery of donor acknowledgements
  • Oversee production and distribution of the annual report, including coordination with vendors, artists, and printers
  • Collaborate with the operations team on program budgets and fiscal reporting in support audits and 990 filings
  • Coordinate donor stewardship activities, such as the Leadership Circle and develop donor incentive programs
  • Support travel and speaking engagements tied to developmental objectives
  • Maintain the development calendar to ensure timely execution of board meetings, grant applications, reports, and donor outreach
  • Prospect new funding sources from individuals and foundations, with an emphasis on converting online supporters
  • Monitor news and philanthropic trends relevant to QI’s mission to identify outreach opportunities
  • Support donor and board engagement, including research and preparation of prospect profiles and outreach strategies
  • Help create targeted fundraising materials tied to specific program areas (e.g., Middle East, East Asia, Intern Program, Democracy and Foreign Policy)
  • Build internal relationships to support program development and fundraising for mission-aligned initiatives
  • Assist in developing and implementing digital fundraising strategies including via email, LinkedIn, FaceBook, and video campaigns
  • Coordinate multiple direct mail and email appeals annually, ensuring high levels of customization and emotional engagement in collaboration with the communications team
  • Maintain QI’s public-facing development content across the website and nonprofit platforms such as GuideStar and Candid
  • Contribute to personalized donor impact updates as needed
  • Support the Director of Development in organizing weekly development leadership meetings and board development committee meetings
  • Assist with QI’s public-facing programming, including staffing webinars, in-person events, and liaising with partners

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in nonprofit development
  • Demonstrated interest in U.S. foreign policy and debates, with knowledge of restraint-focused literature preferred
  • Experience securing foundation funding and writing successful grant proposals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present policy issues clearly and persuasively
  • Proven research ability and commitment to high-quality writing
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects effectively
  • Experience with donor databases (Raiser’s Edge preferred) and proficiency in Google Suite
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Creative problem-solver with the ability to anticipate needs and synthesize diverse inputs
  • Strong alignment with QI’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to its goals

     

Education and Training

Degree in political science, international relations, business, psychology or marketing preferred. Development experience may substitute for an advanced degree in some cases.

Minimum Experience

3-5 years of relevant professional experience in nonprofit development, ideally within public policy and advocacy organizations.
