Position description

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Assistant Professor of Politics who
will also serve as a Core Fellow in the Division of the Core and Centers for Excellence in the School of Arts and Sciences. Core Fellows form the nucleus of the permanent teaching faculty dedicated to the undergraduate Core Curriculum, which operates as a distinct department in the Division.

Applicants should share the Core's vision of-and commitment to-a classical liberal education in the Catholic Tradition. Core Fellows teach particular academic subjects in
their own right, but from a philosophical perspective and with an eye to the interrelations across the core curriculum. More information about the Core Curriculum at the University of St. Thomas can be found at https://catalog.stthom.edu/core-curriculum.

Interested applicants should possess a terminal degree at the time of appointment in Political Science or a related field. A chief requirement is to teach the Politics and Society core class- an introductory course on the political and social order with an emphasis on the American context, presenting theories and their real-life application. Themes include natural law, civil rights and civil liberties, and forms of social and economic organization. A knowledge of Catholic Social Doctrine is also preferred.

A record of teaching excellence is required; competence to teach undergraduates in more than one discipline, and a liberal arts or great books background, are both highly desirable.
