Position description

We lead the UK’s diplomatic, development and consular work around the world.  We employ around 17,000 staff in our global network of 281 offices worldwide. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride and in Milton Keynes.

Your role with us

We are currently recruiting for 2 UK based Conflict Advisers, a Conflict Adviser for the Office for Conflict, Stabilisation and Mediation (OCSM) and a Conflict Adviser, covering Ukraine.

In addition to filling the 2-posts advertised we will be building a reserve list we may use to fill similar UK roles that may arise over the next 12 months.

With conflict growing globally we’re currently looking for Conflict Advisers to join us here in the UK. You’ll work to promote effective conflict and crisis prevention, support conflict management and enable the resolution required to support the conditions for sustainable peace, security, poverty reduction and prosperity. In addition, you’ll have a key role in helping to reduce the risks associated with conflict with a particular focus on instability, state fragility, insecurity, social, political and criminal violence and the delivery of HM Government’s national security objectives.

We’ll also expect you to provide analysis of the conflict and political contexts in which we’re operating, with a particular focus on power dynamics and why conflict and violence occurs. Collaborating with colleagues in the FCDO, other government departments and our external partners, you’ll translate this analysis into effective policy, strategies and interventions, ensure our initiatives are conflict sensitive, and support peace and security alongside poverty reduction and the pursuit of the UK’s national interests. Helping to define and deliver the government’s conflict priorities, you’ll align your efforts with and be supported by the strategies and tools developed by the FCDO’s Office for Conflict, Mediation and Stabilisation (our conflict centre).

Who we’re looking for

To be a success in this role you’ll have a well-developed track record of providing expert advice in the delivery of conflict outcomes, with a particular focus on the skills, knowledge and expertise outlined in the FCDO’s Conflict Technical Competency Framework. Please read this to gain a fuller understanding of what we’ll expect from you.

You should have relevant international work experience and possess the necessary specialist skills or technical knowledge. We’ll also expect you to be a superb communicator and influencer with a diplomatic but tenacious approach to this stimulating and challenging work.

You must be a British citizen at the time of your application, and you’ll be required to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.  For more information about this process, click here.

We encourage applications from all communities, so that we reflect the very best of 21stcentury Britain. Everyone here gets the support to develop their skills and capabilities as well as benefits that help to make the most of life in and out of work, including a Civil Service pension.

Use your talent and experience to shape our nation’s future, and deliver tangible improvements to millions of lives, including your own.

Please note we are also recruiting for Overseas Conflict Advisers, if you are interested in overseas conflict adviser positions please apply through the overseas campaign.
