Job Introduction

This is a rare opportunity for an ambitious and creative content maker to join the team at BBC Radio York. BBC Radio York is the sound of North Yorkshire. Our towns and cities are vibrant, ambitious and are surrounded by Yorkshire’s iconic countryside and places of historical significance.

About us

Our mission at BBC Radio York is to entertain, inform, and educate our audience here in North Yorkshire, but we aspire to go beyond that. We aim to surprise and delight our listeners every day. The role of an Audio Social Journalist is key to connecting audiences with our content and personalities at BBC Radio York including Georgey Spanswick, Joanita Musisi, and Bek Homer on social platforms.

Connection with our audience is at the heart of our daily output be it across Social Media, Radio or Online, as BBC Radio York is a place people in North Yorkshire calls home. Our shows are all about celebrating where we live, telling great stories and having fun with our audience and now you have the chance to be a part of our team.

Who are we looking for?

We are currently looking for a talented and enthusiastic Audio Social Journalist to join our dynamic team based in York, bringing North Yorkshire’s stories alive across all of our platforms. If you possess a passion for crafting high-quality social media content, then we would love to hear from you.

Main Responsibilities

As a Journalist, some of the main responsibilities will include the following:

• Day-to-day running of our social media accounts.
• You’ll reversion content to make the most of our Audio to reach online audiences.
• Working alongside our Executive Producer, the wider BBC York team and BBC Yorkshire you’ll aim to drive engagement and growth of referrals from social accounts to BBC products and services, including BBC Sounds.
• Promote radio station activities and your creative film-making skills will help you to turn the biggest local talking points into content for social media and our broadcast output.
• You will be the champion of new social media formats like radio studio visualisation and you will need to be a big believer in teamwork because you’ll often be the person colleagues turn to for help - so you should enjoy helping others to develop their digital skills.
• Using social listening tools to find the issues that matter most to local audiences - and have the creative vision needed to turn them into content audiences love to read, watch and share.
• You’ll know how to turn daily radio and TV content into engaging social format and you'll be just as happy creating original digital content using your own skills and experience.
• To be a team player with ideas of ways we can improve what we do.

Are you the right candidate?

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves growing audiences, digital content and Audio and believes in the potential to reach new audiences on social media platforms.

• The successful candidate will have experience of creating high-impact content across multiple platforms.
• You will have an enthusiasm for storytelling and an understanding how the BBC serves local audiences digitally.
• You must have a nose for which stories have the potential to translate to digital audiences.
• You will ideally have account management experience or experience of building social media brands and implementing strategy.
• You must also have a sound understanding of the editorial problems and legal concerns that you may face in this role.
• Ideally, you’ll already have film-making skills and know how to shoot and edit your own material and be comfortable using software like Final Cut Pro.
• A knowledge of social listening tools and how to interpret data as well as using publishing platforms like Social Flow are desirable.
• You don’t need to have a background in journalism or news – you just need to know a great story when you hear it.
