Overview

The Research Assistant provides research and administrative assistance for two scholars in the Foreign Policy program’s Center for Middle East Policy (CMEP). Conducts research and editing assistance for senior fellows working on U.S. foreign policy and Middle Eastern politics, including topics such as U.S. relations with Israel, Iran, the broader the Islamic world, U.S. diplomacy, geopolitics, and regional conflicts; assists with posting materials to the Brookings website; and provides general administrative support to the Center and scholars for events and programs

Responsibilities

Research Assistance (50%)

  • Conducts relevant research for Fellows, Senior Fellows, and Visiting Fellows as assigned.
  • Reads relevant literature as directed; monitors regional media including regional language sources; prepares written summaries and analyses of relevant research areas.
  • Collects and analyzes information; assembles relevant material including press reports, interviews, government data, documents, seminars, and reports from a wide variety of sources including academic literature, library and Internet searches, the local media, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), journalists, diplomats, and others in the field.
  • Writes summary reports, briefing memos, bibliographies and chronologies; compiles abstracts, analyses, summaries, and synthesizes books and articles.
  • Attends and writes summary reports of outside policy briefings, conferences, forums, and symposiums.
  • Updates and checks existing data and footnotes; helps with editing and proofreading of publications; posts material to Brookings website.

Administrative Support (50%)

  • Works with CMEP staff, Foreign Policy staff, and the central Office of Communications to support events.
  • Provides administrative, communications, and logistical support to Fellows, Senior Fellows, and Visiting Fellows as assigned; schedules appointments and makes travel arrangements; copy edits and proofreads as needed; prepares and edits correspondence and memos from verbal instruction.
  • Maintains paper and electronic files and databases of materials on relevant topics.
  • Works with other Brookings staff to prepare and revise content to update web pages of Fellows, Senior Fellows, and Visiting Fellows with new research, event information, and other Brookings webpages as assigned.
  • Provides general assistance for the Center as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject required (international affairs, political science, or related area with emphasis on Middle East politics). Minimum two years of relevant work experience strongly preferred. Experience performing independent or professional research preferred. Experience working or studying in the Middle East is preferred. Must be currently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Knowledge of international relations and Middle Eastern affairs required. Proficiency in a regional language preferred, especially Hebrew, Arabic, and/or Persian. Fluent English speaking, writing, and reading skills required. Outstanding writing and editing skills are required. Strong research and analytical skills are required.

Excellent organizational skills with high level of attention to detail and follow-up required. Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to interact with all levels of internal and external stakeholders required. Superb interpersonal skills; poise, tact, discretion and mature judgment to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in high-pressure atmosphere required. Ability to multi-task and complete tasks in a timely manner whether working independently or as part of a team required. Ability to effectively utilize the Internet, as well as advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, required.

Knowledge of datasets relevant to Middle East policy, and the ability to download, clean, and merge data reproducibly preferred. Familiarity with Stata, Python, or R preferred. Ability to produce graphic representation from raw data preferred, including charts and tables, GIS maps and plots, or interactive graphics, using Tableau, ggplot, or d3.js.
