Position description
Our people are everything to us at Namati. The reason we exist – and can have an impact in the world – is our team of grassroots justice advocates, and the operational staff that supports them across the globe. Our people team helps build a more durable Namati by bringing both structure and humanity to the experience of working here, and by ensuring legal compliance and adherence to our cultural principles in our day-to-day operations.
Namati is seeking HR Manager candidates with a track record of approaching HR with expertise, precision, and heart who can grow and scale our HR function.
The person in this role must deeply understand how experiences with HR shape our work lives – how they can set us up for success and help us access essential support, or create needless stress and frustration – and develop our US HR function to exemplify our values. You may be a good match if you earn trust by being both thoughtful and useful for your team: you follow through, ask questions without needing permission, and don’t shy away from the unglamorous parts of building and maintaining an effective HR function.
This role expands our global People team, providing essential HR leadership for our US entity and partnering with the Director of People to support a strong, equitable HR approach across our global organization. You’ll join a team of five that covers the full people and HR function in specialized roles, and you’ll directly manage a Senior HR Officer.
Responsibilities:
US HR Management
- Manage the US HR function, building cross-functional collaboration and strategic alignment across people strategies, finance, and operations in the US to strengthen employee experience while upholding compliance with laws, policies, and risk management procedures.
- Ensure that US HR policies and processes are aligned with organizational values, legal requirements, and best practices, and are clearly communicated to staff.
- Ensure that we have consistent, compassionate, and clear communications with staff (both individual and team-wide) about HR policy and process determinations, changes, and concerns.
- Provide leadership and guidance for people team documentation and reporting processes, ensuring our tools, systems, and practices support reliable and confidential records.
- Oversee the Senior Officer’s administration of employee benefits programs, assisting as needed to build stronger benefits systems, facilitate collaboration with finance and ops, and handle difficult or unusual HR situations.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees and employment-related processes, reducing legal risks. Stay current on employment law and regulations, ensuring HR policies and practices align with local labor laws, internal audit standards, and general best practices.
- Manage and mentor the Senior HR Officer, working together to strengthen both the big-picture and small details of US HR.
Global HR Support
- Support the Director of People as a key implementation partner on global HR initiatives, processes, and projects.
- Work with the Director of People to support managers across our organization, helping to mediate conflict and work through complex employee relations issues such as performance improvement plans, staff concerns, and involuntary terminations, in ways that align with local law and internal procedures, and uphold our culture.
- Partner with the Director of People, the COO, and other leadership to ensure cases of harassment, discrimination, or other serious concerns are investigated promptly, thoroughly, and objectively.
About you (Requirements):
- Deep US HR, Labor Law, and Compliance Expertise: You have at least 7 years of technical experience in US HR and legal compliance, with increasing leadership responsibility in key areas of this job description.
- People-first HR professional: You understand the powerful role that HR practices have in shaping the human experience at work. You value humility, empathy, equity, and empowerment as key ingredients to build inclusive people policies that drive performance and create a strong, nurturing organizational culture.
- Strong Project Management Skills: Managing complex and legalistic processes with confidence, clarity, and compassion, you contribute both thoughtful long-term strategy and excellent hands-on implementation. You have experience with ideating, planning, building, and iteratively improving organizational processes, and you care deeply about maintaining proper documentation, organization, and execution of critical HR and compliance functions.
- Collaborative & Responsive Communicator: With excellent verbal and written communication skills, you build relationships across teams and cultures with warmth and professionalism, always aiming to support others’ success.
- Skilled Facilitator: You have a proven ability to maintain confidentiality, facilitate breakthrough conversations, and navigate cross-cultural communication in sensitive personnel matters with diplomacy, discretion, and emotional intelligence.
Nice-to-haves
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly desired.
- Experience supporting HR functions across multiple countries or regions.
- Experience with managing compensation policies and systems.
- Experience with HR functions in nonprofits, social enterprises, and/or mission-driven organizations.
Here’s what you might have tackled last week –
- Reviewed and signed off on a draft communication to a staff member requesting a policy exception.
- Reviewed and responded to the Senior Officer’s proposed revisions to the Employee Handbook through lens of best practices, clarity, and legal compliance. Met with the Senior Officer, then leadership, to discuss and propose more substantive changes.
- Met with the Senior Officer to strategize next steps in response to a situation that has arisen with a staff member, and wrote a situation summary and recommendation for the Director of People, Talent, and Human Resources.
- Briefed leadership on an employee's international relocation request, providing an assessment of organizational impact, and a recommendation for or against approval.
- Reviewed a report created by a third-party consultant that includes benchmarking for US benefits, and determine appropriate next steps to take further assessments forward.
- Led a meeting with the Senior HR Officer and Controller to discuss a new policy and set of procedures around timekeeping in order to get aligned on best practices and coordination between the HR and Finance functions. Established a workplan covering drafting to implementation with clear roles and responsibilities.
