Position description

URBAN REFUGEES (UR) is a non-profit working to improve the lives of urban refugees and internally displaced people in countries of first asylum. We believe that solutions to the global refugee crisis exist and that they take roots in refugee communities. We partner with refugees and Internally Displaced Persons to ensure that their voices are heard and that they have a place at the table. We provide technical and financial support to their community organizations and advocate for their recognition as key stakeholders in responses.

This role improves the lives of refugees by identifying and recruiting the next cohort of refugee led organizations (RLOs) to benefit from UR’s capacity building program, identifying potential future funding sources, and growing UR’s global network of RLOs. The position will have use of office space located in Manhattan on 37th Street off 5th Avenue and is a paid internship.

Under the direction of a US board member who is an expert in the field of refugee protection and working with UR’s founder and staff in Paris, you will,

  • Identify RLOs for UR’s Program - Identify countries where large numbers of urban refugees live in dire conditions. Work with UNHCR country offices and local and international NGOs in these countries to locate RLO candidates for UR’s capacity building program. Reach out to these RLOs to explain UR’s program and encourage them to apply for it, then contribute to the selection of RLOs based on our selection criteria.
  • Participate in fund raising – Map Foundations in the US whose strategic mission is aligned with UR’s to countries where RLOs have applied, then reach out to and meet with these Foundations.
  • Strengthen UR’s capacity building program – Develop and improve UR training modules by incorporating into our toolkit the best practices we have identified in the field. Provide support as needed to our head of mission in Kampala.
  • Grow RLO Network – Participate in the development of a global network of RLOs established to support each other through the sharing of best practices and creation of joint advocacy strategies.
