Position description

The AMA Government Relations Communications Coordinator disseminates the AMA advocacy and government relations message through several media. The coordinator plans and produces magazine stories, press releases, direct member communications and other writing projects associated with government relations. The coordinator will work with GRD staff to edit and produce advocacy campaign messaging, while working with the Communications Department to ensure GRD messaging matches overall AMA style. The coordinator will work with GRD staff to produce social media content highlighting advocacy efforts within the rights section of the AMA webpage.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as government relations editor for American Motorcyclist
  • Assists with writing and putting together American Motorcyclist magazine, writing web content and writing news releases, following Associated Press style
  • Produces member-facing advocacy messaging for advocacy calls to action
  • Works with GRD staff to draft communications with government officials at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Assists GRD staff in the creation of advocacy presentations for events
  • Responds to inquiries from membership, media, and officials with input from GRD and other AMA staff
  • Assists GRD staff in creating coherent advocacy campaign messaging across different platforms and issues
  • Works with GRD staff to enhance advocacy content and messaging with visual elements, photos, graphics, etc.
  • Helps manage and create content for GRD social media accounts
  • Analyzes complex government-related issues and communicates those findings with AMA members and media
  • Manages and oversees editorial style consistency in AMA-produced media with respect to AP Stylebook, as well as AMA-specific exceptions
  • Shoots photos and writes features and hard news
  • Interprets and applies AMA positions on wide-ranging issues, in addition to often having a hand in formulating those positions
  • Works with Communications and GRD to decide what issues should go in Rights section of magazine
  • Communicates with external and internal contacts, including public and AMA staff

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications or related field
  • 3 to 5 years relevant work experience with multiple deadlines across multiple projects, including 2 years experience in writing and editing
  • Experience producing motorcycling-related content is helpful
  • Motorcycle license or experience is strongly desired
