Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs is seeking to hire a [Professor of Practice/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer]. Primary responsibilities include teaching students in the Institute’s One-Year Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program and managing the program’s experiential learning consultancy module. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a state-of-the-art workshop course that provides mentorship and guidance to MPA students working on team-based consultancy projects performed for client organizations. Critical to the MPA curriculum, consultancy projects provide students an opportunity to hone and apply skills in policy analysis; research, data analysis and program evaluation; writing and communication for policy audiences; leadership and project management; political and organizational analysis; and the practice of working for stakeholders.
With the support of the program’s staff, the successful candidate will generate suitable consultancy projects from public, non-profit and private-sector organizations, both in the United States and abroad. The ability to teach other core courses in the MPA program (such as microeconomics, statistics, program evaluation, policy analysis, and public management) is highly desirable. There may be an opportunity to teach policy-relevant elective courses in the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise.
The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University aspires to promote a just and peaceful world through research, teaching and public engagement. Watson’s MPA Program enrolls approximately 60 students per year from the United States and around the world.
Candidates should have extensive experience and be familiar with the basic techniques, concepts, and theories of public policy analysis and application. A doctoral degree in public policy, economics, political science, sociology, public administration or related field is preferred, as is demonstrated ability or evidence of potential to foster inclusive learning environments in the candidate’s teaching. The Watson Institute is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their teaching and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
