Position description

We are seeking a Deputy Editor-in-Chief with a strong track record in international journalism, team management, and first-hand multimedia digital experience to help lead our award-winning newsroom.

This is a unique opportunity to participate in shaping the future of the Foundation’s news offering, driving innovation and digital transformation, through audience-data-led editorial decision making.

You will manage teams of award-winning journalists, help set the agenda for what we cover and how we cover it, and deliver content that is worthy of our world-class reputation for trusted, fair, accurate, and in-depth journalism, aimed at purpose-driven professionals.

International affairs is your turf, particularly climate, socio-economic and racial inclusion, ESG, the impact of technology on society, women’s rights and LGBT+ rights. You care about how these forces impact us, and how telling the right stories about that impact will help build better societies.

You bring excellent story judgment, an in-depth knowledge of what drives a digital audience, and talent for motivating teams to produce unique, powerful and impactful content.

As an editorial leader, you will be an evangelist for digital audiences, with a deep understanding of audience development, SEO, and producing content that drives digital engagement. You will be obsessed with the nitty gritty of your teams and their work, while never losing sight of the big picture – serving the audience with the high-quality content that they seek.

Inside the newsroom, you are a collaborator and an enabler. You will run a tight ship, with a robust editorial calendar, and an insistence on timeliness, and quality over quantity. But you will also create a culture of conversation, learning, and working across teams.

About the Role

  • Have day-to-day management of the Input and Output Planning desk, and the sub-editing team, guided by the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles of “integrity, independence and freedom from bias”

  • Oversee the assigning and output of a global team of journalists producing content focused on climate, socio-economic and racial inclusion, ESG, the impact of technology on society, women’s rights, LGBT+ rights and labour rights

  • Help upskill editorial staff to ensure delivery of award-winning journalism across digital platforms and the wire

  • Engage with the Digital Engagement Editor to use audience data in story selection and publication, and drive audience growth

  • Champion the use of SEO across all output

  • Collaborate with journalists, and Video and Social Media teams, to evangelise multimedia storytelling across digital platforms

  • Coordinate with Product & Technology teams to continually assess the adoption of technology and digital strategies to drive innovation and enhanced content distribution

Qualifications

  • Extensive and outstanding multimedia journalism experience

  • Proven track record in covering international affairs across multiple subject matters and time zones

  • Excellent story judgment, writing skills and a proactive solution-driven approach

  • A deep understanding of SEO and audience analytics

  • Strong background in audience-data-driven editorial planning and  decision making

  • Excellent managerial skills with the ability to lead whilst retaining and nurturing talent

  • An obsession with planning and being organised

  • A deep appreciation for deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and collaboratively, delegating accordingly

  • Humility to admit to not knowing how something works (and curiosity to find out how it does)

Please note, the deadline for applications is Friday 3rd December 2021.
