The Program Director will lead Crisis Group’s work in Asia aimed at preventing, mitigating and resolving deadly conflict in the region including specifically the research and analysis, development of policy recommendations, and publication and advocacy activities of the Asia Program. The Director will have management responsibility and accountability for the resources of the Program including leading and motivating approximately 12 staff members located throughout Asia. The Director will contribute to the overall strategic direction of Crisis Group.
Provide leadership, vision and strategic direction to the work of the Asia Program in order that it develops and advances options and opportunities to prevent, mitigate and resolve deadly conflict in the region;
Establish an annual work plan for the Program of research, publications and other outputs, and advocacy in collaboration with relevant colleagues;
Oversee implementation of the annual plan and other work by Program staff, in particular ensuring field-based research and analysis leads to the timely production, publicity and advocacy of high-quality reports, briefings and other publications on conflict situations in Asia;
Ensure written work by field-based staff meets Crisis Group standards in terms of policy coherence and consistency, persuasiveness in policy recommendations, and overall quality;
Contribute to the depth and relevance of Program work by following relevant international developments in conflict and sharing this information and analysis;
Supervise staff and manage the Program’s budgetary and administrative matters, and ensure that the Program’s governance, accountability and reporting requirements are observed and delivered in full and on time;
Work closely with representatives of governments and non-governmental bodies including civil society and other conflict actors and stakeholders - at local, regional and international levels - to advance Crisis Group’s options and policy recommendations for addressing conflict and its origins in Asia;
Maintain an active advocacy program in and on Asia, leading personally, aimed at optimising consideration by conflict actors and stakeholders of Crisis Group’s publications and other outputs;
Contribute actively to the Asia Program's and Crisis Group’s public profile and impact, in consultation with Communication colleagues, including through contributing written and other outputs across diverse media channels (including social media);
Support Crisis Group fundraising with selected governments, foundations and private donors, in consultation with Development colleagues, including initiating efforts to identify prospective financial supporters; and,
Participate in the Core Group of senior managers to contribute to the overall strategic direction, and corporate policies and culture of Crisis Group.

Post-graduate qualification in international relations, political science, social sciences, journalism, or equivalent through experience;
10 or more years of professional experience working in the field of conflict research, analysis and prevention - in government, academia, international organisations, non-governmental organisations or the media;
Extensive knowledge of Asia’s security and public policy issues, and experience of living and working in the region;
Expertise covering governance issues, security-sector reform and institution-building;
Excellent writing and analytical skills, and ability to formulate well-targeted policy recommendations;
High quality editing skills and a track record of editing experience;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent public presentation skills and experience communicating with the public through speaking, writing and social media;
Strong capacity for effective teamwork and proven management and team leadership experience;
Experience in overseeing budgetary and administrative matters; and,
Fluency in English (oral and written) required; and proficiency in one of the languages of the region preferred.
