About the European Climate Foundation

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was established in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help Europe foster the development of a low-carbon society and play an even stronger international leadership role to mitigate climate change. The foundation works through several sectoral, cross-cutting, regional and international initiatives and collaborates with a wide network of partners to advance progress towards this shared goal.

About the role

The ECF is now seeking applications for an experienced and highly driven individual to take on the role of Fellow of the Clean Energy Innovation Programme.

The Clean Energy Innovation programme’s main objectives are to build on the innovation agenda to raise climate action and ambition internationally and domestically; to help significantly accelerate the lab-to-market process in Europe for commercializing clean energy technologies and solutions; to increase Europe’s and European countries’ commitments to fund clean energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D). Through this effort, a suite of advocacy-related activities will be carried out to ensure that countries achieve maximum outcome and impact from increasing innovation budgets, communicate on the success stories to make this agenda more prominent in national debates, and bolster international collaboration on clean energy RD&D.

It closely interacts with Mission Innovation and the Breakthrough Energy Coalition.

Duties and responsibilities

The Fellow will be responsible for overseeing the Clean Energy Innovation programme, focusing primarily on Europe in 2018-2019, and ensuring it is aligned with and supportive of the ECF’s wider programmatic objectives. The Fellow will be working directly with a number of strategic partners to develop expert perspectives and advocacy positions on clean energy innovation for Europe.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leadership and co-ordination of the Clean Energy Innovation programme, including strategy development; alignment with wider ECF objectives; oversight of budget; and development and implementation of effective grant-making strategy;
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with external stakeholders and opinion formers across Europe to inform the strategy and improve effectiveness;
  • Building and maintaining good relationships with grantees and other strategic partners to develop a strong advocacy strategy in support of the programme’s goals;
  • Working closely with ECF colleagues supporting the Clean Energy Innovation programme (programme assistant/Senior Associate);
  • Working with other ECF programmes to ensure strong alignment of strategies and sharing of best practice and learning;
  • Engaging closely with ECF’s core funders and other members of the philanthropic funding community and raising funds for the programme;
  • Commissioning of impactful research and convening of stakeholders;
  • External representation of ECF in Europe (although it is envisaged that this will not entail significant media work or public profile).


  • University degree or equivalent;
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in the NGO, foundation or private sector (utility or investor);
  • A deep understanding of the European and international political and policy context, particularly as it relates to climate change and energy issues. Understanding of energy innovation subject area (finance, technology and/or policy) a plus;
  • Demonstrated political savvy and ability to develop advocacy strategies to meet specific objectives;
  • Excellent strategic thinker, with the ability follow through with smart and adaptive implementation plans;
  • An independent self-starter able to work on his/her own as well as part of a team;
  • Strong networking skills that enable effective collaboration with a diverse group of partners;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, with the ability to crystallise complex issues into effective and readable strategy documents. The ability to speak other European languages very welcome;
  • Enthusiastic personality, with a positive, can-do attitude;
  • A genuine interest in the mission and values of the ECF, and in supporting a global effort to find alternative low carbon energy solutions that are reliable and affordable;
  • Proven track record of working in an environment that demands professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.
