Position description

The Jain Family Institute is seeking a fellow in ethics, law, human rights, and/or international relations to support our work with a United Nations organization on the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate has an advanced degree (e.g. JD, LLM, PhD) in law, philosophy, political science, public policy, or international relations, with an interest in the use of artificial intelligence for humanitarian action and sustainable development. You will be  researching diverse ethical frameworks, drafting guidelines for the use of big data and artificial Intelligence, and consulting on applied governance projects in the Global South. Familiarity with the UN is desirable, but not required.

JFI is an applied social science research organization. Our work investigates and influences the structural forces of society. Our interdisciplinary team collaborates with industry, government, and academia to pilot scalable, high-impact interventions. The fellow will join a small team of practitioners with backgrounds in normative ethics, economics, decision theory, public policy, data science, education policy, finance, and philosophy and will work closely with JFI’s Project Lead in Digital Ethics and Governance.

The initial appointment for this fellowship is one year. 

Selected candidates will be invited to interview via video conference. 

Responsibilities

Time commitment: 40 hours per week

Confidentiality: as needed

The fellow's tasks will include:

  • Conduct research and analysis on the impact of artificial intelligence on public policy and human rights globally, leading to publication(s) in recognized peer-reviewed journals
  • Drafting principles and guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence and big data in humanitarian action and sustainable development
  • Develop tools for recognizing and analyzing online discrimination and hate speech
  • Launch and support the Expert Group on Governance of Data and AI
  • Support the development of a governance framework for the design and use of AI for sustainable development goals in the Global South
  • Lead the effort to address selected recommendations of the UN Secretary-General’s High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation 
  • Organize workshops, events, and other programming related to digital ethics projects
  • Participate in research activities (talks, reading groups, etc.) at JFI and the United Nations

Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Interest in the use of artificial intelligence for humanitarian action and sustainable development
  • Knowledge of ethical theory and a broad range of ethical frameworks
  • Strong analytical writing skills
  • A love of rigorous research and reasoned debate

 Helpful Skills and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the United Nations and/or related organizations
  • Some background in human rights or international law
  • Demonstrated experience as a research assistant or comparable experience in applied research
