Position description

The Department of Political Science at Delaware State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Political Science, to begin in the Fall 2022 semester. We are looking for a strong record of scholarship and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching within a diverse environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach in areas related to comparative government, American domestic and foreign policy, and global studies. A Ph.D. in political science is required by the date of appointment. Also required are a strong record of scholarship, the ability to teach effectively, and an ability and willingness to participate actively in the Department’s advisement and service responsibilities. Delaware State University is an HBCU located in Dover, Delaware.

Essential Functions

The following are the functions essential to performing this job.

  1. Teach survey and upper level courses in political science
  2. Teach the following existing courses: Comparative Government, American Foreign Policy, Contemporary Political Ideologies, and Seminar in International Orgs
  3. Create new courses in International Law and Environmental Law, and in other relevant areas
  4. Conduct on-going research for peer-reviewed publications in area of expertise as prerequisite for promotion and tenure
  5. Perform service on university, departmental and community committees
  6. Recruit and Advise students

Other Functions
Individuals in this job may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis.

  1. Supervision of internship, independent study, and senior capstone
  2. Contribute to department programs, initiatives, and promotion of activities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  1. Relevant teaching experience at the university level
  2. Familiarity with computers
  3. Demonstrate institutional citizenship through active engagement with the department, college, university, public, and professional communities

Qualification Standards

  1. Education: Ph.D. in Political Science, International Relations or related in hand by start of employment
  2. Preferred experience: University/College level teaching

Performance Standards
The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the DSU Fundamentals
  2. DSU-AAUP CBA requirements, especially Chapters VII, VII, XII
