Reporting to the Executive Producer, the Supervising Producer leads the team devising and shaping The World’s daily editorial output. They are responsible for selecting and assigning stories to create the most compelling hour of international news heard on US public radio stations. They always strive to advance the story and find original angles that distinguish the program in a competitive marketplace. The Supervising Producer has a deep knowledge of international news, and demonstrates an innate curiosity about events and the people that drive the news in all regions of the globe. They are a standard-bearer in the newsroom, committed to innovative journalism and the highest standards of editorial integrity. They are an inspirational leader, providing guidance and direction on conducting interviews and the creative use of audio. They are rigorous about managing and meeting deadlines. The Supervising Producer actively seeks out and promotes diverse, new voices. They ensure that multi-media opportunities are maximized and that digital activities are integrated into the broadcast in fresh ways.


  • Lead the daily production process, providing editorial guidance and leadership to the production team.
  • Place items in the program to ensure that the program has coherence and works as a whole, reflecting the mission of the broadcast.
  • Guide day of air staff in finding the best coverage of stories.
  • Collaborate with the digital team to ensure that on-line activities are integrated into the broadcast and vice versa.
  • Devise and implement ways for the broadcast to maximize multi-media opportunities.
  • Provide incisive feedback to the production staff, to encourage and enable them to develop.


  • At least five years experience in broadcast news production at a senior level.
  • Developed experience of team leadership.
  • A strong understanding of international affairs.
  • Experience in exercising news judgment at the highest level and the ability to generate original ideas.
  • Sustained experience in editing the work of others, advising producers and reporters in how to shape their story.
  • Experience in leading change and innovation.
  • Experience in fostering a positive, collaborative work environment in high pressure, deadline driven environments.
  • Experience inspiring others to bring out their best.
  • A deep understanding of the public radio system and its needs.


Bachelor degree required. Relevant post-graduate qualification preferred.
