Position description

RAND is deepening its commitment to racial equity, through the establishment of a new Center to Advance Racial Equity Policy that will operate in partnership with RAND’s Social and Economic Well-Being (Well-Being) division. We are seeking to attract a talented researcher to serve as the inaugural Director of this Center and chart its future.  With an initial investment from RAND, the Center seeks to develop and apply approaches and solutions that will build racial equity-based systems and policies for the future.  The Center will focus on solving racial equity problems, developing equity-minded policy leaders, and strengthening RAND’s collaborations with other organizations dedicated to advancing racial equity.


The Director will spend approximately half of their time developing a strategic vision for the Center to advance a growing portfolio of innovative and high-impact racial equity research and analysis, leading the effort to execute to that vision, and ensuring integration with other teams across RAND.  The successful candidate will work with executive leadership to support philanthropic fundraising, external profile raising, and broad engagement with a diverse set of RAND stakeholders.  The Director will spend the remaining half of their time as an active member of RAND’s research staff, furthering RAND’s research portfolio on racial equity.


Major responsibilities include:


- Provide strategic leadership for RAND research on racial equity issues:

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision to advance a growing portfolio of racial equity policy research and analysis, working with VP Well-Being

  • Create a clearinghouse to help link and coordinate RAND interests in racial equity and better showcase RAND’s work externally

  • Support efforts to aid staff in including racial equity in research design, methods, dissemination, etc.


- Work with RAND’s VP Development, VP Well-Being, and other senior executive leadership to develop and execute an ambitious philanthropic fundraising agenda to support center initiatives


- Develop external efforts to raise RAND’s profile and enhance impact in racial equity issues:

  • Identify and cultivate external advisors to the Center

  • Create engagement opportunities (e.g., RAND forums, participation in external networks) to increase RAND’s profile on racial equity issues

  • Expand on RAND’s civic action roles in racial equity


- Establish an equity and policy fellows program(s) to advance policy leadership in racial equity


- Strengthen institutional collaborations and develop partnerships with other organizations committed to advancing racial equity


- Provide input and support to RAND’s Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion agenda to diversify our workforce, create a more inclusive climate


  • Leader with demonstrated record in racial equity research or research in a closely related field

  • Experience creating and executing a strategic vision, developing and maintaining a program of research, and building client relationships

  • Established history of successful research and philanthropic fundraising

  • External outreach skills in areas such as community-building,  dissemination of research and analysis findings, and ability to engage diverse stakeholder groups

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, including a clear commitment to diversity and inclusion

  • Strong communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to deliver effective presentations to a wide range of audiences

  • All research positions at RAND require excellent analytic skills; the ability to collaborate and work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity


Education Requirements

Master’s degree in relevant field is required; Ph.D. or other doctoral-level degree is a plus.



  • PhD plus a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience required with six or more years preferred or Master’s degree with a minimum of eight years of experience and 10 or more years preferred.

  • Experience in areas such as fundraising, communications, civic action and implementation is relevant and of interest
