Position description

The Center for Collaborative Journalism in partnership with the Department of Journalism & Media Studies invites applications for a non-tenure track position as a Journalist in Residence (JIR)/Assistant Professor of Practice. The CCJ is interested in a professional journalist with experience in data journalism.

This is a year-round position in which the candidate will lead core investigative, data and engagement reporting classes for students who learn to produce content for print, online, radio and broadcast news outlets. The candidate also will remain active in a professional journalism capacity by contributing work to CCJ’s partner newsrooms and community engagement efforts. The candidate will assist with CCJ’s ongoing efforts to recruit a diverse group of students into the program.

At least five years in a professional newsroom is required. Full-time experience with data journalism within the past two years and experience in multimedia packages and Adobe Creative Cloud tools is strongly preferred. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in journalism or a related field is required. A master's degree is strongly preferred. Candidates should have experience using technology with a preference for experience that includes computer-assisted reporting, DSLRs, audio equipment and mobile video. Candidates should have strong storytelling skills as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

The Center is a unique community media collaborative combining Mercer’s liberal arts-based journalism and media studies program with the professional expertise of local media partners that include The Telegraph, Georgia Public Broadcasting and 13WMAZ. The Center also manages Mercer’s low-watt, non-commercial station, WMUB. Students study journalism and media studies but work with the partner organizations to hone their skills and build their portfolios all four years of their college experience.
