Media Democracy Fund seeks a bold, creative leader to join the team as the Director of Programs. This is an opportunity for an innovative leader to develop and shape strategy on some of the most pressing issues of our time: digital equity, tech accountability and addressing disinformation targeting communities of color.
Media Democracy Fund (MDF), a project within New Venture Fund (NVF), is a catalyst for an open, secure, and equitable internet. MDF brings together diverse voices to design inclusive and responsible solutions and empower public interest advocates to create an environment where digital technologies and the internet have a long-term, positive impact on society.
Reporting to MDF’s Executive Director, the new Director of Programs will lead key MDF programs, sharpen existing strategies, develop new initiatives, and deepen institutional knowledge to maximize the impact of MDF’s work. The Director of Programs is also expected to be a leader within the fields and sectors in which MDF operates, enhancing MDF grantmaking efforts through partnerships with network and movement organizations as a facilitator, collaborator, convener, innovator, and bridge-builder. The Director of Programs is responsible for a substantive portion of MDF’s overall programming and mission-driven activities, as well as oversight and management of assigned staff. This is a full-time position that will include significant travel when public health conditions permit.
In close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director of Programs will steward a dynamically evolving programmatic strategy and related responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be a tactical and skilled manager as well as a strategic thought partner. The Director will be comfortable working remotely and bring the communication abilities to build and foster strong relationships outside of an office setting. The Director should also bring an interest and track record in developing the skills of highly talented individuals implementing mission-aligned strategies. They will have knowledge and experience in at least one of MDF’s areas of focus and be capable of leveraging knowledge acquired by MDF and its community into different programmatic areas.
Success in this role will require an innovative and energetic leader with a commitment to racial justice and equity, and an expert ability to work both internally and externally to effectively engage a range of MDF funder and civil society stakeholders. They will balance disciplined execution against strategic priorities, and have the flexibility to pursue opportunities that emerge, including the ability to synthesize large amounts of information to achieve results in a fast-paced environment. The incoming Director will also demonstrate the ability to build trust. They will be a team leader and player who motivates and educates other organization members and understands the value of interpersonal relationship building. They will be a strong communicator who partners with staff and grantees, but also engages in thought-partnership with organization leadership and other key stakeholders.
