Along with many of the University’s core departments, the Global Risk Office is based at Stanford’s Redwood City campus, featuring state-of-the-art buildings, a recreation and fitness center, dining pavilion, and central Bay Area location, five miles away from the historical Stanford campus.

Stanford’s Global Risk Office, a high-profile team situated within the Office of the Chief Risk Officer, is one of the few departments with University-wide purview. Team members gain a broad enterprise perspective, assist in a wide variety of activities, and make meaningful contributions on a daily basis. Global Risk functions are complex and have a significant business impact on Stanford’s core mission of teaching, learning and research.  


As the Senior Specialist for Global Community Engagement, you will lead and oversee programs and functions under minimal supervision. This position is responsible for bringing substantive knowledge of global risk to the Stanford community through outreach and educational initiatives. An interest in, and deep knowledge of geopolitical issues, international relations, overseas travel risk assessment and mitigation, global emergency response, and experience in community outreach and engagement is required for success in this position. The ideal candidate will understand issues that impact overseas travelers who are engaged in research, academic and experiential learning opportunities. The candidate’s experience in designing knowledge-building events, and knowledge of best practices in community engagement, and innovative, impactful teaching-learning methods will enable successful programming to help the Stanford community to gain knowledge of global risk and mitigation.  


In compliance with health and safety laws and policies related to COVID-19, the Global Risk Office has been working remotely since March 2020, and will continue to do so in the near future. While interviews for this position will be conducted virtually, finalists may be invited to campus for a final interview. 



Core Duties 

 In this role, you will:  

  1. Plan and lead outreach, continuing education and training of the Stanford global community on issues of global risk and mitigation. 
  2. Develop tools, materials and best practices for community education on global risk issues. 
  3. Engage in global travel risk monitoring and assessment, and proactive risk monitoring of program locations and assets. Develop appropriate mitigation strategies.  
  4. Establish, assess, and update global health and safety guidelines, policies, processes, and resources.  
  5. Participate as a responder in international incidents; lead global incident response. 
  6. Recommend, define, and document best practices in global risk and mitigation. 
  7. Conduct pre-departure traveler orientations.   
  8. Develop nuanced understanding of services provided by third-party providers, including third party resources for community education on global risk.   
  9. Identify risk gaps and support global risk gap mitigation efforts. 
  10. Support ethics and compliance projects consistent with Stanford’s guidance and policy, and applicable domestic and foreign laws and regulations.  


Education and Experience 

Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Master’s degree preferred. 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Demonstrated experience and/or skill in leading outreach efforts in global risk and mitigation. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of geopolitical issues, international relations, overseas travel risk assessment and mitigation, and global emergency response. 
  • Experience in designing knowledge-building events using innovative, impactful teaching-learning methods. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in community engagement. 
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and decision-making skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience in global travel risk assessment and mitigation.   
  • Demonstrated skill building relationships and understanding the needs of diverse populations. 
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring global events, emerging risks and health, safety and security developments worldwide. 
  • Demonstrated emergency management skills that include ability to think on one’s feet, strong analytical, evaluative and prioritization skills during an emergency. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be calm, clear-headed and decisive when handling critical incidents. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines. 
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals. 
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team. 
  • Strong relevant subject matter knowledge. 
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as necessary. 
  • Familiarity with the Stanford or other academic environment and culture is preferred.
