Position description

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.  We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We make a positive contribution to the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

We work with over 100 countries in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society.  Last year we reached over 75 million people face to face and more than 758 million people overall including online, broadcasts and publications.

This role is in Communications, which leads global strategy and plans across internal and change communications, media and PR, crisis communications, events management and digital communications.  

Role Purpose:

This role is part of a team that delivers the external media strategy, promoting and protecting the British Council’s reputation through the UK media. Working with the Head of Media this role devises creative PR approaches for broadcast, print, digital and social media to reach arts audiences in the UK and showcase the British Council’s cultural work around the world.  This role also offers reputation management support to colleagues in more than 100 countries.

 Main opportunities/challenges in this role:

  • To develop, implement and evaluate proactive PR approaches positioning the British Council in national and key arts sector media to build awareness, understanding  and engagement with priority audiences 
  • To lead the media relations for the British Pavilion at Venice Biennale, including managing support from a PR agency 
  • To integrate reputation opportunities and risks into project development working with colleagues in art form and regional teams
  • To work with the Head of Media and Director of Communications to manage reputational risks calmly and professionally on behalf of the British Council and the UK’s international relations.


  • Demonstrable experience creating, delivering and evaluating media relations as part of integrated campaigns over a period of months or years to support business objectives 
  • Experience of developing relationships with senior journalists, including in broadcast media and working with them to deliver impactful coverage.
  •  Experience of working with communications team in a partner organisations on joint projects to ensure that all partners achieve their communications objectives on a shared project
  • Track record of identifying and highlighting reputational risks and successfully mitigating impact
  • Experience of training and guiding senior colleagues on working with the media and giving interviews.
