Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located in the UN Liaison Office for Peace and Security (UNLOPS, Brussels) in the Division for Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
DPO was established to provide political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates.
DPET is mandated to develop and disseminate the policy and doctrine guiding the work of peacekeeping
UNLOPS is responsible for building the UN partnership with the EU and NATO on matters relating to peacekeeping and crisis management and UN-EU partnership on peace and security more broadly.
The Intern reports to the UNLOPS head of office.
This internship is for an initial period of two months and may be extended up to six months depending on the needs of the Division.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Responsibilities: As a core member of the UNLOPS team the intern will carry out the following responsibilities:
-Report on how the EU and NATO is taking forward policy work on a range of frontier issues of relevance to UN peacekeeping.
-Follow EU policy developments closely relating to peacekeeping
-Closely monitor the European press and relevant policy fora and committees on issues pertaining to peacekeeping
- Knowledge of, international affairs, including current political developments. Sound knowledge of UN peacekeeping and basic familiarity with the work of the United Nations in the area of peace and security.
- Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns;shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)
The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

By accepting an offer of appointment, United Nations staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and assignment by him or her to any activities or offices of the United Nations in accordance with staff regulation 1.2 (c). In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
