Position description

Working closely with the Vice President (International), the Head of the International Relations Office is responsible for leading the team tasked with developing the College’s academic partnerships with international organisations including universities, governments and funding agencies. The Head plays a central role in the development and delivery of the College’s international engagement strategy, ensuring this is closely aligned with, informed by, and complementary to the core academic mission of the College.

Imperial’s strategy for 2015-2020 emphasises the importance of international collaboration, placing it at the core of the College’s mission. The post-holder is required to work flexibly across world regions in order to develop and support new strategic international opportunities as the need arises. The post-holder is responsible for managing a range of important relationships for the College, seeking to maximise joint value across activities in research, education and innovation. The post-holder also plays a key role in facilitating, coordinating and shaping international activity across the College and helping to identify new initiatives and opportunities, working closely with the relevant academics and Faculties.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will lead and nurture an expert, highly-performing team responsible for developing international engagement strategies to support the College’s core academic mission

  • You will identify emerging opportunities for the College to develop international academic partnerships that help address global challenges and attract the best global talent

  • You will build and maintain strong external networks for the College: these will include representatives of higher education institutions, national governments and funding organisations, both overseas and in the UK.

  • You will be a credible advisor to internal colleagues (including academics, professional services staff, and the College’s leadership team) on international academic partnership priorities


Essential requirements

  • We are looking for a candidate with a strategic and analytical mind-set and with a successful track record of working consultatively to develop strategies

  • Proven experience of leading high-performing teams, and a demonstrable ability to motivate and develop members of staff

  • Professional credibility, intellectual depth, maturity, and collaborative skills to garner trust and confidence of academic colleagues, members of the College’s leadership team, and external partners

  • Highly developed knowledge of the international Higher Education, science and innovation landscape
